I’m on consolidation runs, and I seem to get slower each time at the mo! 😅 know it’s not all about speed but it’s a bit discouraging.. although tbf it has been either very hot or very windy recently, plus have felt quite tired out generally.. not sure if it’s a mental thing
Hope to try a Nike Run Club speed focused podcast soon and see if I can change this trend!

Heat... wind... tiredness... yeah, they’ll all mess with a run! Don’t worry about the pace... slow is good right now and always will be at least 75% of the time. Nike speed runs are good, have you done the regular ones yet? Coach Bennett has 30 minute runs and 5k runs where he will get you running at the right effort levels, and while they can seem slow during, they tend to be quite quick. There’s also a couple of runs he calls “head starts” and the headspace runs where he will have your mind doing things other than think about the run. The real key to consolidation is making it an easier run, so pace doesn’t matter still... I enjoyed finding slower gears during this time. If we ever get a nice mild, still, cloudy day we may all be amazed at how much progress we are making.
Thank you! This is really useful. I’ll try those Coach Bennett ones. I tried one of the Headspace x Nike ones the other day which I liked. Today the c25k one messed up and stopped playing, so I just had my podcast as a distraction, which was nice but didn’t offer me much encouragement in terms of the actual run! 😅
He’s the guy you need in your ears... I ran lots of times and while he gets you running the right way for the duration/distance, he also develops your self coaching, and now I do most of my running with no headphones... I still run the odd one with him though... and he talked me round a whole half marathon in November!
In the guide to post C25k running I mention the statement made by an experienced trainer that most recreational runners spend far too much time at a middling pace, whereas they would benefit from spending 75-80% of their time at an easy conversational pace to build stamina and the solid aerobic base required to push hard in the remainder.
So, run slower and then run faster.
This training pace calculator runnersworld.com/uk/trainin... may help you realise just how slow you should be running for most of your time, if you enter your fastest 5k time to date.
Trying to beat your pb on every run is the sign of a rookie runner.........slower is good.
