Am I actually running???

So I've just completed W7 R2. Up until now I've been doing the runs on a treadmill today I thought I'd mix it up a bit and ventured outside! Wow, what a killer, I really struggled with my breathing 😫. Has anyone else gone from treadmill to road and struggled? Also I've not been running at any speed and always thought that many would overtake me if they we waking beside me, on the treadmill my running speed was around 3.2mph and today my active watch recorded my average speed as 8.2km/h. So am I actually running or just fast walking?!

Running is also an action not just a measure of speed. Id be happy with the speeds you quote. As you progress through the program and beyond speed and endurance thus distance will improve.

Maybe you´re JOGGING :-) And nothing wrong with that. 8.2 km/h is a perfectly respectable pace ´you really shouldn´t concern yourself with it to be honest.

RUNNING is a stride where-in BOTH FEET are momentarily not in contact with the ground.

WALKING is a stride where-in ONE FOOT is always in contact with the ground.

10 years ago the "ACCEPTED PACE" for one to be considered a "RUNNER" was that of 8 minutes/mile or 12.07008 kph or 7.5 mph; HOWEVER, one could very well be considered "RUNNING" even at a slower pace because both feet would be off the ground at some point during the stride.

MY advice is to ENJOY what you are doing whether running - jogging - walking and continue to improve yourself. BTW -- many would agree that it is more difficult to maintain a given pace when "pavement pounding" than when on a treadmill or dread-mill.

NOTE: from personal experience I am in agreement with the notion that it requires greater athletic ability to speed walk at a 10min/mile pace than to jog or run at a 10min/mile pace. I can not run for any appreciable distance due to bowed legs with bone on bone knees thus I was forced to perfect my walking stride that allowed me to accomplish my goal of a 9min/mile pace years ago.

I used to use a treadmill a few years back (wore a few out) but when I decided to do C25K I thought I’d venture outside instead although I did feel very self conscious at first. I’m so glad I did though as it’s so much better to be out in the fresh air and you get a true sense of the distance your covering and the capability of your body increasing.....stick with the great outdoors would be my advice 👍 ☀️
