Doctors. No symptom is too small...

As some of you may know, my better half and I had to stop running in 2018 due to serious illness (One each! I'm not selfish ;-) ) Mine is an issue with my heart.

In 2004 I had a stent fitted for a 95% blockage in an artery. It worked well up to the start of running, when I started to get aches in my left shoulder. I went back to the doctor and expected to be told that I have to expect it. But no!

Sent to the hospital for first angiogram, result clear. Then a Stress MRI after my doctor insisted, result clear. Finally, after my doctor told them to do their job right I went back in for a pressure test. To test the pressure each side of the stent. Bingo... Stent was getting blocked! They had totally missed it and sent me away.

Anyhoo, that was fixed on the spot and all is well. We started running in January this year doing the C25K thing again and noticed that I had trouble breathing and getting enough oxygen to the muscles, I was also getting dizzy on standing. Made an appointment with the doc and he found that the consultant had prescribed 3.75mg of Bisoprorol instead of 1,25mg. That was keeping my heart rate too low and has now been corrected.

Doctors, consultants, nurses and well, all NHS staff are not angels as people like to think, they are human and can make mistakes. They are massively overworked and under a lot of stress. Check on what you are given. Ask questions and take notice of your body. But whatever you do, keep running.

Interesting, I am also on 3.75mg of Bisoprorol, and I get dizzy every time I stand up. My resting heart rate according to my Fitbit is currently 57 or 58 bpm...

My resting rate on my Garmin is 49. My Doc said I should aim for between 60 and 70. I will try the 1.25 and see what happens. I have some 3.75 left, so will break those in half and cut it to around 188 to start (I hate medicine waste) and when finished, I will go to the new ones. May be worth chatting with your Doc too.

Edit. Just found they break into three which is 1.25 each bit. I'll do that instead!

Welcome back Rumour! Hope your recovery continues! You’re so right, we need to own our bodies and keep asking questions of our medical professionals. They’re all brilliant people but mistakes happen and often we’re the only one who knows something isn’t quite right. Happy running!

Blummin eck Rumour , thank goodness you’re ok now and all that was wrong was put right and you’re now able to carry on running. It’s true, the NHS is under so much pressure but it’s still a fantastic thing and we are very lucky to have it ☺️
