Hi everyone! Ive joined c25k because im sick and tired of being so big! My problem is that im currently recovering from leg surgery on my tibia and have not ran in years on years. Please tell me it will be possible! Also im finding it so hard to commit to diets considering living with my in laws who do not eat healthy ONE BIT! How do i separate myself and my foods from theirs and not be tempted?

Eat before or after them...?

Make up your meals in advance...freeze some etc...explain how you feel and why you want to do this..

If you get the go ahead from your doctors...then check out this post for Newbies..

healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

...then..linked with a healthy eating regime...you can get started.

Yes, it is possible...and you can do it.

Slow and steady is the mantra...

C25k works! I hated running for 50 years then decided to do it! Now I love it, the way it builds your stamina almost without you noticing is amazing. Get the all clear from your doctor then trust in the plan! And once you’re gaining confidence in your running, you’ll get the confidence to change your diet. Baby steps are the way forward. It won’t solve all your problems but will improve your life. And keep posting here, these guys are great and will support you all the way.

Hi there amboxo .... I dont know much about the leg surgery but as it goes with living with parents/ in laws I'm right with you as me my partner and kids live with my parents at the mo... it is hard but is it possible for you to cook separate meals? just politely saying you will do your own... I get up early and get the slow cooker ready then it's ready for me and the kids after work... there are many meals you can adapt with the slow cooker. As it goes for the c25k I believe it is possible I've never ran before and am on week on 3 now believe in yourself you can do it! 😊

Hello ambxo, welcome to C25K and this forum. - You’ll find loads of help and support here! You may not lose any weight purely through the running but you will feel better, that’s guaranteed! To lose weight you’ll have to address the diet somehow - is there a way you could cook separately for you and your part of the family? Oldfloss could have the answer- perhaps you could batch cook some meals ahead of time to eat when everyone else is eating theirs? I’m sure you’ll sort something out but in the meantime enjoy your C25K!

If you help with the shopping, shop healthy. If you don’t buy it you can’t eat it ! Slightly smaller plates are helpful (but don’t pile them high instead !) Drinking water can make a big difference if you normally drink sugary stuff or alcohol. Little changes add up, so don’t get intimidated. I call my fat “Ethel”: by making it a different person to real me it’s easier to deny it things like cake and crisps ! Be as far out as you like and you will create strategies that work for you. We’re all on your side here 😀

Have you come across Weight Loss Resources? Check out their web site for help and advice on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Also, Gillian Riley's book Eating Less - say goodbye to overeating.

Take it gently and good luck on your journey ☺

Invest in Pinch of Nom books, they do some great nutritious meals that the whole family can eat. If they don’t want any, freeze it for yourself. Make sure your leg has healed and then take your running journey nice and slow so you complete each run. It’s not going to be easy but it’ll be worth the time and effort you put in. Good luck 😉

Can you time your runs so you are doing them whilst they are eating?

Maybe don’t try to solve everything at once? It can be overwhelming. Once you’re into the C25k programme it can become a useful tool for eating differently from your in-laws without offending them, which I imagine must be an issue. And as Pebblesrun has said, doing the programme will give you confidence to do things differently. It works! Life-changer!

Just take it really steady repeat weeks if you need to. Try eating more protein it fills you up and builds lean muscle. You will get there!

I'd try small changes to your meals that don't really affect them. For example I've stopped eating rice and baked potatoes & substituted bulgur wheat which is a better grain protein wise. I swapped skimmed milk for soya light. Everyone else has the same as always, so it's no hardship for them. I weigh out my portions as much as possible (it really helps), and I have myfitness pal (free app) which helps me count calories as I go, and I log the exercise too so when I should eat more I do.

I also try to buy foods they like and I don't! Biscuits are my downfall, so we only have ones in the house I don't like (doesn't stop me baking though!)

Also talk to your family about what you are doing and why. Easier to do it if they support you. The exercise won't help you shift weight immediately but it is cumulative. Keep going and once you are in the later weeks the calories burnt will start to have an impact.

Don't expect quick fixes though it will take time to get fitter and lose weight so be patient. Crash diets don't work. Small sustainable changes do. I lost 5kgs last year doing C25K and making small changes/calorie counting but that took 4 months. Be realistic about how long it's going to take and you are less likely to be disheartened & give up.

Good luck! You can do it 😁
