Period of illness - time to recover fitness?

I graduated in September and have been running 5k twice a week since. Although, I'd like to run more often I find it difficult to fit it in. Anyway, I think twice a week has allowed me to maintain a decent fitness level.

However, for the last 3 weeks I've been very ill with a kidney infection and the effects of the antibiotics have been brutal. I'm recovering now but its very slow. At the moment I can't imagine walking to the end of the road, never mind running. Ive started to think about how (and when) I can get back into running.

I'm wondering how long it takes to regain the fitness and ability to run after an extended break. Has anyone done this before? Will I need to start again from week one or should I go out and run and see how long I can manage?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I have to admit, I'm feeling very old and unfit at the moment.

Firstly get yourself fully fit. Then when you feel you are go out for a no pressure run and see what you can manage and build from there. Get well soon and good luck 😊😊

You poor thing that sounds awful...... Allow your body to recover and then you could do C25k from a week you are comfortable with, or just do some very short runs till you are ready to pick them up a bit?

Yes, I think I'll start back with the intervals on week 4 and see how I get on with that.
