One mans lonely road

I'm not sure where to start this...

I think I'll start with my divorce. That was quite messy. It was over five years ago but it still hurts. It hurts less now as I have learnt how to accept it and how to deal with it.

The next stage after divorce was far too much beer. I dont mean like a few pints...like crawling home on the f****** kerb..

To be able to face up and deal with it all I found this thing called "running"

I lost several years of my life without actually understanding why. I lost many good friends who gave up or just did not have the time.

It was a very scary and lonely time in my life.

This thing we all do called running is life changing...along with the people who come with it.

I think one day it will actually help prepare me for the life that's a head of me.

X

An evocative post, which I am sure many will relate too. This running is about so much more than just running.

Wishing you the strength and determination to continue with this wonderful activity and that it will continue to give you what you need and eventually play a part in restoring the balance, and the joy in your life:)

Thank you for posting this...I wish you many, many more happy runs...( One where I will be too, soon I think 😆)

This community on here and out doing Park Runs, is a great therapy, on all levels. It makes you healthy, gives you focus and then gives you colleagues. It has helped me. Great to see your journey on here. On wards and on wards.

Alcohol can be a perfectly understandable way of numbing pain until your brain is ready to deal with it, and a highly effective way of testing out who your true friends are - in my husband’s case, that turned out to be just me. So don’t hold the past against yourself: you’re not a failure, you’ve been through hellish times and survived, and now you’re ready to move on to better things. Running will help. Treasure your true friends, and that includes yourself. We’re all right here with you x

A powerful testimony from someone who has used running to claim life back from alcohol. Inspiring. Good luck moving forwards.

Good for you. I'm sure many of us can relate to this. C25K is such a powerful way of moving from bad times and self destructive behaviour to taking control and relearning how to love and care for yourself. Well done and here's to many happy times to come

Thank you all for your wonderfull and supportive comments. There are too many to reply to indivdually but it means so much to me to be part of this wonderful group. 🥰

I still enjoy a social life now but I have control over my actions. Self control is a key factor. My long training runs have so helped with that. It's amazing how you can take what you learn from one aspect of running and apply it to parts of your life that are...shall we say going wrong 😎

What an eloquent description of what has clearly been an extremely difficult period of time for you. Thank you for sharing it and I think you have turned things around amazingly.

Running is a fabulous way to clear the mind.

I find it naturally reduces the alcohol I drink (although I’m not a huge drinker) because too much alcohol affects my run the next day, and we can’t have that can we! Lol

Keep growing in strength and enjoying your running. The only way is up. Take care.

Same here madmother! I often find myself thinking shall I have a glass of something then realising it'll make the next run feel urgh. The nights when I don't have running coming up I seem to get to about 10pm before I think about it and then it's too late to have one 😁

Wow Windoze, what a journey you have had. I have so much admiration for you, taking that first step to move away from the alcohol and towards a different way of dealing with things. Discovering that you still have worth when something so utterly crushing has happened is not easy. A huge well done to you.

Oh Windoze, big, big hugs. That must have taken a lot for you to type out. You’re stronger than you will ever realise - you’ve got through all that, now onto the rest of your life 🤗🤗🤗

Just came across your post here. You’re a brave soul to share it all. You are not alone. I fully agree that the running helps manage the darker moments in our lives and the discipline of training gives us strength to not go down some roads that might be more damaging. I also find the longer runs especially good for this. Good for you and may the future miles give you what you need.

Starting running helped me navigate my way through grief, much in the same way it has helped you find your way through loss. I think most of us here run for the headspace it allows us to find as well as the validation it gives us when acheiving our targets and goals set. I hope running continues to bring you hope.
