Went to the GP with knee pain this morning. He manipulates it, and cheerfully tells me I've woken up hitherto undiagnosed arthritis, and it's NOT happy. 45 minutes later I'm being x-rayed, and now wait to hear from GP when he gets the plates. He's written a referral to physio, but the wait is looooooong. Been in pain all day, which is very debilitating, and had to listen to the work group talking about getting through W3R1. From tomorrow I shall use a walking stick to get about with less pain. So, it's been nice knowing you and I'm gutted, but at the moment my main hope is that the knee heals with little in the way of permanent damage.

😩 that is awful for you. I do feel for you. I hope they find out it isn't arthritis or that they can treat it x

I'm sure...but once you know what's what...we have many runners on here with arthritis .just try to stay positive:)

Hi floss! Long time :) Thanks for these links, they're so helpful! I'm on arthritis meds for the constant inflammation my knees, but the doctor says I can run slowly if I take walking breaks, and I'm over the moon to hear it. It's good to 'see' you :)

We have so many folk asking about running and arthritis...and it is,good to have sound advice...the Arthritis UK site has some great motivational stories too .

Snap. Doctor told me perhaps to do cycling or swimming. Physio was a bit more switched on and told me to recover then start gently. That's when I started C25K. Running has been absolutely brilliant for the osteoarthritis in my knees. I took it slow and stayed on week 2 for a few weeks and they are now pain free (except I later tore the meniscus in the right one but that wasn't done running).

I also changed my running style to take some of the impact off my joints. When you start again run very lightly, like trying to sneak up on someone (but not with a manic look on your face).

Running is about patience and perseverance. You'll be fine.

That’s such a shame newrunner but you did the right thing in going to the doc. Fingers crossed that you can restart C25K before too long - good luck!

Don’t despair, arthritis doesn’t need to mean the end of running! Best money I spent was on an experienced physio. Was less than £40 for first diagnostic session, only needed 2 more! Treatment, exercises, advice and became pain free very quickly. Now I run regularly and can self manage any flare ups. Be patient, for some of us C25K is about the long game! I feel for you. I had arthritis diagnosed in right knee about 3 years ago and (after 45 years of running) I thought my running days were over. But pilates and physio and careful exercises to strengthen other bits around the knee have really helped. Also get some really well padded - and well-fitting - shoes. Then come back to it gently, both in style and amount. I wish you well.

That’s so miserable, so sorry to hear it. But I hope you’re feeling encouraged by the posts here - it sounds like even if it’s not now, in the future you might come back to it. Feel for you though.

Thanks everyone, I'm hoping to be a bit more positive in a while, but at the moment being in pain all day is very tiring, and lowers the spirits.

Radiographer report says no structural damage, GP's manipulation says no muscular damage/bruising, so the diagnosis is 'degraded cartilage'. Which means chronic pain while I wait for physio (appointment 22 Aug), then 3 months physio to see if that can overcome it before any kind of surgical intervention will be considered. What larks . . . . .
