Keep getting a stitch

Week 1 completed! :)

Never ever thought I’d be someone who ran voluntarily, but having lost 5 stone since September through walking, swimming and healthy eating, I thought this might be a good next step. Am enjoying it so far, but keep getting a stitch. It’s not too bad and I can run through it, but wondered if it’s something that will get better as my body gets more used to running, or whether anyone has any helpful tips to stop me getting one in the first place?

I used to get stitches at times when I ran in school, since starting couch 2 5k though I can’t remember getting one til Wed eve when I went out with the running club I’ve joined.

Luckily it was more of a niggle and went fairly quickly - whether that was because I was drinking some water, concentrating on my shuffle jog or just plain lucky I’m not sure 🤔 - sorry!

However, I am sure someone will be able to answer as I’ve never fully understood them 🤗 x

Slow down a bit.

Usually a stitch is caused by running too fast when you've just started running just try and slow down 😊

Make sure that you are drinking plenty of water every day too as apparently that can help. And well done on your weight loss, that's about my weight loss goal, I am not quite halfway there but feeling so much better and fitter already.

Welcome to the forum and well done on your progress.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

To reduce stitch slow down and breathe fully and deeply, exhaling everything in your lungs.

To avoid it, slow down, hydrate as described in the guide, but avoid drinking while running.

No stitch today on my first week 2 run! Felt like the slightly longer run time helped me get a better pace and rhythm, and I also tried to focus more on my breathing, which I think helped. Feeling good :)
