I’m coming to the end of week 4 but find that my legs are hurting at the back. Any advice?

Well done for getting this far... are you warming up well and doing those post run stretches:)

We do expect some aches and pains with this new form of exercise... so, as the runs are getting longer, up some of the non impact exercise you do on some of your rest days. That may help.

Take it very steadily and try to land lightly too. I call it, kissing the ground with your feet..relax into the runs :)

Like old floss has said and I find if I haven’t drank enough the day before my calves can hurt after a run I know we’re not doing serious miles but the weather is much warmer and we need hydration

Some wee aches are to be expected when you start but if it’s more than that three possible explanations are footwear, hydration and running style. In terms of running style Oldfloss has given you some hints. For hydration remember it’s important to take on enough water on the days between runs as well, not just running days. If you think footwear might be an issue try getting a gait analysis at a proper running shop.

I'd guess your legs are just complaining about the new regime. As you get fitter and stronger, so will they. As Oldfloss says, find some exercises to do on your 'rest' days.

Hi Pink,

Try some stretching before and after running, I have a post on stretching, people have posted some great links.

Drink a lot of water, a lot a lot of water! That’s the advice everyone has given me, I also have a post on leg fatigue you might want to look at.

Take your rest days however many you need, definitely one day off, and maybe another if you need it.

After a run I give my legs a massage / rub and I’ll use a foot run mixed with tiger balm, this is just something I do for a bit of soothing and then I elevate my legs whilst watching TV for a little while.

Let us know how you get on, you want to jump on it so it doesn’t happen on your future runs.

Well done on completing week 4! I bet it’s been a great journey so far, keep going you are at the half way point in week 5, yay! xx
