I’ve got really lumpy thigh muscles that feel really tight. Any top tips for releasing them? I live in a really remote area and can’t get to see a sports masseuse for a few weeks - I’ve just joined a local running club so don’t want to miss a session - can running with muscle knots cause futner problems? Any advice gratefully received

Foam roller!

I've only had calf strains and for those used a foam roller (which actually hurt more than the strain!). I watched a video on YouTube to see how to use the roller - they can be used for thigh muscles apparently.

Foam roller vote here too, my physio highly recommends one, her advice was do one leg at a time and reasonably slowly for about 1 min at a time for each muscle area rolled. It can hurt, but in a good way which is difficult to explain, apart from you just know it’s doing good. Roll as soon as you can after a run when your muscles are still warm. I drive back about 10 mins from my run and roll as soon as I get into the house as I can. Hope you find some relief.

+1 for foam roller... particularly the vicious looking ones that look like tractor tyres! You can also use a tennis ball or similar if you have specific spots you want to get into a bit deeper.

Another vote for a foam roller, I have a Pulseroll Plus, as recommend by forum member johnt46 and it is very good.

After my Sports Physio diagnosed Crepitus in my knees he recommended foam rolling my quads to help stretch them out which should help, so I do that each night and after running.
