Advice welcome

Hi Everyone,

After hitting the big 50 a few years ago, I’m looking to challenge myself, get fit and hopefully loose a bit of weight. I’ve never try running before, and would be grateful for any advice and tips.

Thanks

Hi and welcome, the moderators and mentors will send you links to everything you need to know I’m sure. I too started C25K end of January for the same reasons and I’m in my fifties too. On week 7 now and absolutely loving it. The key is slow and steady and follow the plan exactly at around week 4/5 you’ll need to ensure you get some proper trainers and a gait analysis as the intensity increases. But all in all just follow it to the letter do not worry about speed or distance just finish each run, and if you have to repeat a run or a week for any reason so be it - many people do.Good luck

Hi thank you so much for the info, and the advice about trainers as I was wondering.

Hello, this plan is excellent for people who like me had never run before. Follow the plan and you will be fine , go slow the point is getting to the end of each run not how fast you can do it. Give it a go you might just surprise yourself 😊😊

Hi thanks, that’s encouraging to know it’s for good for beginners. I was wondering about my speed, and if it matters. I’ll keep it slow and steedy.

Hi there...good for you!..I did much the same a few years back at 52. Never ran or wanted to but always enjoyed walking. Followed 'Laura' on the downloadable podcasts off NHS C25K site and couldnt believe that by the end of 10ish weeks I was jogging for 30 minutes!! I followed the plan exactly and tried to get my 3 runs in a week but gave myself the flexibility if I wasn't well or feeling up to it. I felt mentally and physically great doing it too. The first few weeks are tough if you've not done anything before but if you just keep at it and follow the programme it really does work. I found writing on here a great motivator and got lots of advice especially if I struggled to finish a run and had to repeat that day etc. I read up a little bit about ways to breath when you jog which helped me learn a pattern (breath in through nose for four steps then out through mouth for 4 steps - but that's just me) and also found a few simple stretching exercises to do when id finished a run while i was making a cuppa. Other than that...trust the podcasts/programme...it works :-) I've just done day 1 Week 1 today as completed it 3 years ago and been ill since so trying to do it again so right there with you x

Thanks for that really useful information especially about the breathing. I’ll give it a go and see. Oh have a listen to the podcasts. 👍🏻
