New Runner, New shoes?

Hello there!

So I’ve just started the c25k, and completed my first week. I’m actually really enjoying it so far, which is a big deal as I haven’t really ran since I was at school. However, I only own a pair of supermarket brand £10 trainers and can feel that they aren’t supporting my foot at all.

I’m still over weight (have lost 4 1/2 stone though!) and have quite wide feet. Any recommendations for trainers (I’m not sure if you can advertise brands on here?) And if I could ask, what does everyone look for when they are looking for a suitable pair or running shoes? I’m guessing the weight of the trainer effects running?

Sorry for rambling, all new to me! Thanks in advance :)

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and includes a link to a post about shoes.

My perfect shoes might actually injure you, so random advice about shoes is not really very helpful. We are all different.

Enjoy your journey.

Best thing to do is go to a proper running shop that can do gait analysis on you - they look at your walk, and how you run, scan your feet to see how you beat your weight and can advise on what’s best for you. Even before you go looking for new shoes ensure you’re not running how we walk - avoid striking your heel. Search Japanese slow jogging movement on youtube and you’ll find a great short film showing a low impact running technique that shows you foot placement. I run this way all the time to avoid injury. But definitely recommend the gait analysis!

I’ve just finished W1 too. A friend recommended a proper fit at a specialist running shop where they know what they’re doing. You may feel it’s pricey but you will find it to be a really good deal in the long run! Good luck with W2!
