Clothing recommendations, please

I'm beginning to seriously enjoy this running lark and to think it might just change my life. I feel so much younger and more energetic that I just can't contemplate slipping back into my old ways.

So I'm starting to think about sustainability. I think my risk time is going to be March and April... after graduation but before the warmer weather.

Therefore I'm going to need a waterproof running jacket. Problem is, I'm still too large for the ones I've tried. E.g. Ronhill Everyday Jacket looks perfect - nice and light, breathable and water resistant. However, even their XL is too small for me at the moment.

Any suggestions/recommendations?

Why don’t you look for something in an XXL online... I’m not your size but I have something I picked up in the sale from Mountain Warehouse which works for me .... u can invest in something more expensive when you have reached your optimum size

An umbrella ☂️? 😂 I tried a nice wind chill top in Decathlon but it was so tight around the tummy that I reckon all would just bunch up leaving me with week 1 bare tummy run style. So far in rain and snow I’ve just gone out and got wet because I don’t know what to use as I overheat very fast. I’ll be interested to see what is recommended to you!

I overheat fast too so not sure what to wear if it’s wet out. It’s not been an issue so far but it’s bound to happen at some point. This week I’ve just worn my sports bra n a thin long sleeved loose cotton top from Primark n I was thinking of wearing a t-shirt for my next run. If it gets much warmer I’ve no clue what to wear. If I was slim I’d just stick with the sports bra but no one wants to see my flabby belly exposed, least of all me! 😂😂

Yes, I get very hot too. My plan was to wear a thin tee-shirt and then a VERY light vented waterproof top/jacket over the top.

Someone below mentioned Decathlon... for some reason I'd overlooked them, perhaps because I hated the shoes I got from there that hurt my ankles! Dropped in and got two very thin jackets... one wind proof (just over a tenner) and one waterproof but with great big vents everywhere (£30 in the sale). Both a teeny bit tight around the middle but that won't last long the rate I'm going. Will report back once I've tried them out.

Am defo going to do the eBay charity shop thing once I'm a bit smaller and need the next size down. :)

Will definitely give Decathlon a try then, thanks for the tip. A light vented waterproof jacket sounds like just the job, will keep an eye open for your review 👀

How about the Contra range of clothing that Paul Sinton-Hewitt (Parkrun genius) has developed? It comes in all sorts of different sizes and shapes. It’s not the cheapest but it’s good quality stuff and all the profits go back into parkrun. They do a hooded top but not a jacket yet. But then again, you may get away with just layering up as the days get warmer.

Another idea is to search eBay - at the moment there’s quite a lot on there as the Resolution Runners are starting to give up, I’ve just got a couple of bargains on there.

I've just looked on ebay and have ended up with some extremely odd looking stuff... must have clicked somewhere wrong in the process!!

Thanks for the tips, you are right, there seems to be plenty of new-ish stuff!

I know what you mean. Tops aren’t too bad but if you look for leggings and shorts you get some very odd things. If I look for leggings these days I try to restrict it to brand name.

Yes that’s it! It was leggings I was looking at...

Who’d have thought someone would be happy if you answered yes to ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ 😂

Haha snap

Yes I looked at them first. I definitely don't want anything that adds warmth so discounted the hooded top. Hope they do a light jacket for the future.

I think you can send through suggestions somewhere on their website as it’s supposed to be customer led, so I should think they will.

Try Amazon for Helly hansen - good quality and you can get larger sizes at reasonable prices. The Loke is waterproof and windproof and has underarm ventilation. If you are not fussy on colour you can get cheap. They are great quality and with Amazon you can return for free if it does not fit

Good tip, thank you :)

I bought a cycling jacket & it works well - got all the right ventilation & breathing, etc. The brand is Endura. Also, worth trying Oxfam’s on line shop. I volunteer for them & we do get a lot of donations from the January enthusiasm lot. Size availability is random, but price is always excellent. Good luck.

Will have a look at Oxfam... didn't know they had an online shop. :)

Have a look at the startfitness sale. I’ve picked up a load of bargains on there including a running jacket for a fiver that I’ve been using recently

Will do :)

Also over the coming few months keep an eye on LIDL and ALDI specials. They sometimes do very good ranges of running gear at very reasonable prices. Hats, Gloves, running tops, running jackets etc. some of my best running gear is from LIDL and ALDI.

Thank you. Have seen some stuff there, yes. Haven't yet found XXL, but hopefully won't need that much longer.

Thank you, everyone. I will check out all these suggestions! :)

If you’re not brand-precious, try sportsdirect - they have some light weight karrimor waterproof breathable tops and other stuff. Also if you live close to a Decathlon try there - their own brand stuff is really good value and quality.

Thank you. Having read your comment I dropped into Decathlon and got so.ething I think will be suitable. Their ranges go up to XXL, which I can just about get into at present. :)

I don't think I have ever not regretted wearing a jacket. I have however regretted not enough buffs (neck, ears, head) and good enough gloves. If it's below zero then a short sleeved t shirt over the usual long sleeved one is often good.

If you are determined to buy a jacket of some sort though, a word for Polaris cyclewear. I have one of their windproof jackets and it is... and is of course longer at the back and with a silicone bit to keep it in place. I am still mourning the winter gloves (especially with the terry bit for nose wiping!) They have some good sales and sizing is generous.

Thank you - will have a look. I've never been cold whilst running but was very wet and miserable on one run, hence wanting to try a very thin jacket. I just know there will be lots of wet weather running here! Will see... can always flog it on eBay if it's impossible to run in.

If you think you will change shape - and you will - my advice is don’t buy too far in advance and spend as little as you can initially.

Pianism profile image
PianismGraduate in reply to Jay66UK

Indeed. I can wear the jacket now, it's just a bit tighter than is probably decent! My one consolation is that there won't be many around to see as it will have to be raining heavily for me to want the extra layer. :)

Not sure where you are in the world... here today it was 50F, and the last thing I’d want to be wearing is a jacket once warmed up. I don’t know what it is in C, I never understand the weather on the TV... but you’re looking at adding 10 to it and dress according to that temperature... for me it’s 20... so today was the equivalent to a pretty hot summers day for the time I was running... so it was shorts and t-shirt again today.

Pianism profile image
PianismGraduate

Yes indeed. I'm in shorts and tee-shirt unless there's snow on the ground! It's the wet that's the problem! :)

Nike do a larger size range. They had some on Very when I was looking?
