Running with a ball

I have been thinking about changing some of our good sports games for making keeping fit exercise games which may be good for the heart. If we have an objective to achieve a goal or reaching some point then running and walking would become a more enjoyable exercise and so we would be self motivated to do it every week without fail. I have found that Basket Ball is a good game for physical exercise, it doesn't stress the heart too much. Perhaps an improvement may be worthwhile. The players may have two or more basket nets for goals, they may be spread far apart so that there is a bit of long distance running to attempt to achieve a goal. Using the hands to take away the ball and pass it to fellows in a team and using the legs for running appears to be a good idea. It also involves jumping and skipping which is a good exercise for strength and flexibility, also helps develop skills in being light and active in everyday life. We need to jump and skip over stairs, stones and road blocks and many objects in our way in daily life. Throwing the ball with a hand and both hands may also help develop useful skill in our abilities to handle things, pass on items to others from a distance, stack some goods on upper shelves in stores and warehouses, bring down something from the trees or roofs, take a short flight to touch the top and leap forward.

Think it’s depends how you play basketball... those NBA guys raise that heart rate!

That’s said, the game itself came from a fitness point of view... and some tweaks could work will for a fitness regime.

I suppose when there are many people in a team or group and they get excited, shout, yell, punch around then it would raise the heart rate. We should train to be more calm and cultured and less rough in order to play for cardiovascular exercises as well as a matured game

Have you seen a basketball game? It’s pure cardio and no (well very little) rough... it’s a non-contact sport... and there’s 5 on a team at any one time. These are prime athletes but they can only physically play for a few minutes at a time before they slow down. Basketball is actually as close to what you’re describing as any game I ever saw. Just the playing raises the heart rate... same is true of ice hockey these days... I miss the violence there.

I have played basket ball game at the Church school in Africa, that was as far back as 1969. Also seen basket ball game on TV, most sessions were played by women only.

I know a lot of physios use catching a ball as part of building up your core. It is something to do with the act of catching a ball slightly puts you off balance therefore it works the core. Or something like that 😀.

Some of the navy blue balls I have seen in the gym were heavy, not like a football or basket ball. I think the ideal ball for running around with should be soft and bouncy
