100 kms to go... Alzheimer’s Challenge Update

Hello all you lovely runners out there on a yucky Saturday in London.

11/12s of the way through my Alzheimer’s Challenge to raise £2018, in 2018 by running 2018kms. How am I doing? - on the fund raising front not as good as I’d like but, thanks to many people on here, far, far better than I’d imagined.

On the kms front, I have run 1918.41kms - please don’t giggle at the 0.41, every bit of a metre is important to me!!! And that means a measly 99.59kms to go. Of course I don’t mean measly because two years ago doing that kind of kilometrage in one month would have been unthinkable, but thanks to Mr Smooth, our mentors, and all my lovely friends on here, 99.59kms seems an easy target now.

It feels even better now that all those myths about running being bad for you have been de-bunked well and truly.

The other great thing I did in November was to get an invite from Alzheimers Research to see how they are doing with research into Alzheimers and Dementia. It was fascinating, interesting and encouraging, whilst also being utterly depressing at the same time. I never realised that Alzheimer’s was discovered over 100 years ago, but of course it has only been relatively recently that we’ve had the technology and capability to even look into cures.

Here is the spoiler alert - the gold standard is to get a cure and reverse the symptoms, the realistic aim is to slow down the progression, so much so that people die naturally of other causes and not their dementia. It sounds wonderful to me, but as ever there’s a sting in the tail, the Head of Research said realistically even with gene therapy and stem cell capabilities, he and his team believe that type of ‘cure’ is 50 years away. That means his researchers - typically in their 30s, may not even be able to benefit from the research they do. They are committed to the research, as the numbers of drugs being developed in clinical trials have dropped by almost a third recently and some companies such as Pfizer are pulling out of the field altogether.

That was an eye opener to me, and so with my eyes firmly open, this month I aim to do my final 99.59kms, taking in the suggestions to do a Royal Park run as my final run on Christmas Eve.

And this month to keep my running fresh, I’ve been searching for Mummycav ’s mojo, so far she has been damned difficult to find, but I have 99.59kms to find her before the year is out. I tried using the Mummycav mix on Spotify yesterday, but it didn’t seem to work - but it was a shortish run, in not the most interesting parts of town..

Out again tomorrow, maybe the bright lights of London will help the mojo make her way back to Yorkshire

The funny bit is that the health unlocked app - tagged this post as gastro something or other... maybe it was the word yucky that did it.

99.59? You’ve got that in the bag. What a tremendous achievement!

That’s exactly what I think, but then I don’t really want to say it, in case I hex myself and suffer from my famous stupid tart syndrome and fall over!!! But hopefully it’s distinctly possible to do it - see the caveats are coming out...;)

You have done so well this year! The end is in sight; you will reach your goal 🥳🎉

in reply to SaskAlliecat

Thanks Sask, you’ve been following and supporting me, so you know the ups and downs. I’m feeling up as the kms to go, drop down... I’m avoiding kerbs, and slippy leaves!

It has definitely been a year of ups and downs for you! Here’s hoping for clear sailing through the finish line. Definitely watch out for those kerbs and obstacles. We can’t have anything mess this up now. Hopefully you find your running twins mojo along the way so Mummycav can feel the joy again.

You've done brilliantly Jan, a monumental task and I'm sure very hard at times. A huge well done to you.

That's a big surprise about the research but I'm sure the researchers can take some solace from the fact every single little step forwards they make contributes towards the overall "cure".

Good luck for your final mileage. You'll really deserve a rest at Christmas after all that! And I hope Santa will bring you special presents this year xxx

Thanks Irishprincess - the research day was such an eye opener, we all get caught up in the speed of technology and think cures can be around the corner, but they were such amazing folks, you feel humbled by their intellects and drive. I have in plan a 2 week rest and then back to the roads . Thanks so much for your good wishes and encouragement. Santa has my list...;)

in reply to Irishprincess

It looks as though Santa in the shape of Irish Royalty has already given me a present. Thank you so much for a lovely, lovely donation, it was a brilliant surprise and as you share the sadness of this dreadful disease, I know you know exactly how much it means to me. I really can't say thank you enough for your support and encouragement. JCR XXX

Thanks Iga - the great thing about this place is when you post, you get such a response from your fellow friends on here, that it inspires you again to do your thing. So with all the goodwill messages public and private sent to me - I just did 15kms, I felt like I was flying all the way... Is your running any different now you’re a married woman??? ;)

Hehehe. My running got back on track afte wedding, I graduated and after 2 weeks of double, chaos, and exhaustion, I am back to running 3x a week, even if it's a short run. I managed to do all of it thanks to the fellow runners on our forum :)

Fly till the finish line and further!

in reply to IgaT
