Help please need a perk up - feeling so excited with making it through week 2 and enjoying (most of the time) running - saw my mum and brother today and proudly announced what I had been up to - to be slammed down - why running - so bad for you, your knees, makes your face and Boobs saggy - not good for you!? - I know I am old enough (wrong side of 50!) to know better but pretty crap negativity from loved ones!

It’s not their fault that they’re wrong! Running is good for the knees if time is taken to allow them to strengthen. Also as far as I know boobs don’t sag more because of running, think that’s just a gravity thing! It’s also good for every other bit of you. Now, they’re probably looking out for you, like I said it’s not their fault, lots of GPs thought/think that running is bad for the knees... so why wouldn’t they?

Once they see you fitter, stronger and happier at the end of this plan they’ll change their tune no doubt. Until then you got us for cheerleading duties, and we are pretty good at it too... I’m just not wearing the tiny skirt 🤪

Thanks so much - have you tried hydratherapy for your ankle - helps speed up recovery just helping the body to repairs itself - 2 buckets one hot (not overly so) for 3 mins bring the blood to area to help heal and then one cold for 1 mins forces toxins away quickly - repeat 3 times at least once a day!

Ooooo I will give that a go myself. I have issue with my ankles when running.

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that. Well done for completing week two. If you could tell me how to reply with a picture, I'll send you one of my dog looking cute if you like to cheer you up???

Aww that’s disappointing x I tend to suss out the negative folk and not tell them. My daughter is my biggest supporter and although she’s 70 odd miles away on each run I think about telling her I did it and this makes me smile. She always makes a fuss and tells me how proud she is of me. It’s got me through some tough runs. Pick yourself a supporter to share your journey with and focus on their positive comments x

Great advice - I suspected they wouldn't be positive but I couldn't resist thanks

You should feel excited at completing week 2 - well done you!

Running, when done carefully as set out in C25K, is good for your heart, lungs, joints and bones.

It can help reverse type 2 diabetes, plenty of people on here say it has helped with their asthma, and it's good for your mental health.

A good sports bra will stop your boobs sagging, and I haven't noticed that runners have saggy faces!

It might be worth googling the benefits of running and passing that information to your family - maybe you'll even convert them into runners too!

Thanks so much - I had forgotten about bones and brains benefits - I will look it up for more - bra sorted!

Meeeoowwww ! Can smell the green eyed monster from here ! It’s funny how often it is family members who undermine, and it’s a sign of their insecurity, not their disapproval. Carry on with what you’re doing, Vigneronne. You know it’s right for you. If your family feel threatened by it, talk to your friends instead. Us, for instance ! 😄

Vigneronne profile image
VigneronneGraduate in reply to ButtercupKid

Thanks - You are so kind and the friends here have already helped enormously 👏👏

ButtercupKid profile image

Good ! It’s enough of a challenge without that kind of let-down. I’ve just realised that apart from my husband, I haven’t told any family I’m doing this, because subconsciously I’ve felt they would respond exactly as yours have done. They’re timid people and find changes threatening. So it’s a need to know basis round here !

You show me two people, one that runs regularly and one that doesn't do anything, and i reckon i could point out the one that's doing something that's bad for them pretty sharpish 😂

Sometimes people can be a bit put out by someone they know well doing something they can't imagine themselves being able to do, as it challenges the picture they've got of them in their heads. My Dad still asks me in astonishment everytime I see him "and... you're still doing the running???". He's not being funny with me (he's actually delighted), it's just that carrying on with something like that just isn't in his mental map of what I would do (nor mine up to now!). Just carry on and be proud of yourself (and secretly take delight at how much it's putting them out 😁).

Thanks so much - maybe everyone is so positive in here that was expecting to find that in my real life!

I was slightly worried about my knees but after my first run it lifted my depression completely so that is the most important thing for me. As for face and boobs l can’t see why jogging would make this worse and besides they are going to sag with age anyway. I’m wrong side of 50 also!!

Vigneronne profile image

True but was hoping to feel better and look better as well!!

Everyone needs a hobby - yours is running, theirs is criticising for no apparent reason. And they think your hobby is unhealthy!!!

I feel fitter already only completed w2r1 yesterday. I walked down the village to meet my granddaughter as she got off the bus as she had late day at school and it was dark (before I would’ve driven. It’s just under a mile each way. On the way back she kept saying slow down I’m tired, why didn’t you bring the car etc etc. I would’ve felt I was dying before I even got there few weeks ago let alone getting back home haha

I'm sorry you had to listen to that negativity 😕, and I'm sure they meant well (??).

Funny how it's generally our loved one's that just knock us down.

If you are enjoying this running malarkey, then stick with it and prove them wrong! Keep doing this for you and only you.

We're all here for you, cheering you on and giving support 👍💪🙌📣🏃‍♀️

And we're all very proud of you 💐

Anyone know where I can get a sports balaclava?

RevRunner profile image

I’ve found my 65 year old achy ankles are feeling looser since I’ve started this and I certainly haven’t noticed anything else deteriorating - quite the reverse in fact!

Often people can feel a bit threatened if somewhere in the back of their minds they feel you have got up and got on with something they sense they should be doing too!

Keep going, and setting them an example - especially if you feel better for it, mentally and/or physically. It will be worth it.

Who knows, maybe one or both of them will see the light and get moving a bit more too before long, even if not actually running but doing something else. 😉

I also had this negativity from the start, eye rolling and smirking. I felt ridiculous at times putting my running gear on because of this but it made me more determined. Week 5 and now they are arguing who can come with me but they can’t keep up so are downloading the plan for themselves - only one person smirking now 💁🏼‍♀️

I had this conversation with someone the other day. But when they said running was bad for knees I was able to tell them that no they were wrong, that in fact it’s been proven that runners have stronger knees than non-runners and the other health benefits are huge- healthier heart, lungs, firmer legs, bum, clearer head, runners live longer than non-runners, blah blah. This was at a dinner party and as soon as I had finished my sermon to the chap on my right, the chap on my left piped up to say he was a runner and also a retired doctor and everything I said was absolutely true! The chap on the right looked a bit sheepish 😕

Many times, people say the first thing that comes into their heads and usually without facts.

You’re doing this for you, no one else. Come here to chat. We get it 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Simply adding my name to your support crowd. My 70 year old boobs migrated south a long time ago 🙃, long before I started running, but the sports bra helps. Knees and joints - excellent; face - well people tell me I'm looking younger these days, with a lovely fresh complexion...and I've lost 7 kilos too. So running is good for you. Enjoy your running, enjoy C25K.

I believe the arm movement and breathing during running helps prevent saggy boobs. Get a good sports bra, ignore the negativity and enjoy the running. Tell them when you’ve graduated, they’ll be thrilled then.

Oh bless your heart xxx. Well tell them I work in a major trauma Hospital and all the Orthopaedic Surgeons have said to me how bloody marvellous it is that I’m running!!! Not one of them has shook their head and muttered about knees etc etc, quite the opposite in fact!

I watched some fab programs the other day on tv by that Mike Mosley, dispelling the myth about running and affects on the knees. Sorry wish I could tell which Chanel it was on but found it on my fire stick. . If I remember I will pm you. My GP said it brilliant that I was following the plan, she knew all about it, said it was part of the Social Prescribing campaign.

One the saggy boobs front, I have quite large bosoms and wear 4 crop top sports bra thingys. Yes 4. I am totally self conscious about it but that works for me, it pushes them up and flattens them down, no more booby pain!

Just ignore the outside moaners and haters because I suspect you’ll have enough to contain your inner negative thoughts.

Be positive and keep going! You’re amazing and are doing something for you, well done xxxx

I’m about to hit 56 - never heard of running making you sag! Good sports bra and moisturiser otherwise it’s down to our lovely Mother Nature!

Be proud of yourself, you’ve started to improve your health - which should matter more than anything. If not speak to them about it except to announce your achievements. Keep going - this is for you (and me; and everyone on this forum). So much about getting healthier etc they should be proud, they may just be surprised! My son didn’t think I’d stick to it but I’m about to start Week 8 today!

Go on - get back into the mode and prove them wrong 👍🏻😊

Vigneronne profile image

Thanks so much - how brilliant you have got to week 8 - only week 3 for me

JJ-1962 profile image
JJ-1962Graduate in reply to Vigneronne

I know I thought the same as you - but it’s not only week 3. Each change in time once I achieved it once I then knew that was the standard I could do it again. Just take it each week and before you know it you’ll be where I am, looking at the end! (By the way it’s about week 10 for me in reality as I repeated W3 after a week off!)

If it's any comfort I have just completed W2R3 and I am 52. What they havent told you is how much fitter and stronger you will feel. People can respond surprisingly negatively to us facing challenges; deep breath and keep going. You are doing this for YOU. Youve got this - believe 🤗
