Really enjoyed this morning's run. Still trying to track my distance. My Fitbit says I'm doing 5k and i certainly felt like i had this morning, there was no wind to pull me back or slow me down and i kept a good, steady pace. I used Strava and Track my Run too but they both lost signal. I would have thought my Fitbit would be fairly accurate and i didn't put it on until just before my run. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Depends on the Fitbit. None of this technology is perfect but if it’s a type with GPS it’ll give you a reasonable estimate most of the time. If it doesn’t have GPS then less so.
Oh it does and I never knew ha ha. I'll turn this on for the next run to see the accuracy. Thanks ArthurJG
When the GPS isn’t on it just counts your steps and multiplies by what it guesses your stride length to be. As your stride length may vary it’s not very accurate at all. GPSs has its issues in certain environments but most of the time it will be pretty near the mark. Be aware however that GPS drains your watch battery pretty fast so make sure you have it reasonably well charged before your run.
Thank you very much ArthurJG. I'll just have GPS on for run days then
How do you know if GPS is on? How do you activate it on a Fitbit charge 2?
I don’t have a Charge 2 but on my Surge if I set it to track an exercise it switches on, but not if it just detects the workout itself. Look at your recorded workouts on the Fitbit app: if it shows a map of your run the GPS was in and if it just has data but no map it wasn’t.
Ah, thanks. Makes sense!
Great job. Sometimes the tech lets us down, not a lot can be done about it. I plot some routes on an app called footpath, so I know pretty much how long a run is before I go out anyway.
I use this website plotaroute.com/mobile/route...
There are plenty of others out there. I like to have an idea of a route before I go out, gives me some idea of distance.
I use Strava too on my phone, but GPS doesn’t always track properly!
