How important are trainers everyone? I’ve just got a cheap (£20) pair from JD Sports that are apparently basic jogging ones. I have put extra heel and arch support in them as I’ve had a problem before with plantar fasciitis. Now I’m on week 3 and pretty sure I’m going to keep going. I know nothing about trainers. Do I need to invest in fancier ones? Is there really a difference? Thanks for any advice!
***uodate! New ones bought! Thanks everyone- they are soooooo much better.

Not necessarily as the ones you bought might be ok for your gait - or equally they might not!
You’d be safer knowing for sure, so I’d recommend getting a gait analysis. Ill fitting trainers can cause a whole host of problems that will sideline you for potentially months.
But you might be lucky! Good luck, and it’s great that you’re going to stick with running! 😀👏
Most good sports shops do them I think. Have a google. And I think the gait analysis is free if you buy new trainers at the same time, otherwise there’s a fee. Not sure if that applies to them all.
Eventually as you build distance you’ll likely want to invest in shoes with good support and cushioning. Not necessarily top of the line. I wound up with Sauconys that have been great. There are so many options out there
As cheekychipmunks says you may already have the right ones for now. More expensive doesn’t always mean better. Your feet need shoes right for you. Couple of informative posts below on the subject. Some shops charge for gait analysis if you don’t buy so check first. Don’t think you have to buy just because you have it done either.
If I could find a way to add a picture I would! I bought myself a pair of mizuno trainers- spent more than I planned - of course- as they had lots of extra padding! So much better to Jog in!
Not sure if you can add a pic to your original post. Try clicking on the “More” button under your first post on this thread and then edit. Towards the bottom you should see “add photo” and follow the instructions. If not just start a new thread because the add photo is there.
Just in case, in the future, you want to add more than 1 pic you will need to download a collage app, get your pics together from that and then upload the collage to here. I’ve done it once, so is easy (but I’ve deleted the app so can’t remember which one it was - doh!
Those shoes sound good. I like Mizuno, they were my first proper ones too 😀
I would recommend getting a gait analysis. I had some "gym trainers" that appeared fine until I had my gait analysis done. I was convinced I was being ripped off in the shop until I went for a run and my god the difference was amazing. My gym trainers were fine for the gym however my new ones are so light and I can really feel the difference!
I would say yes, JD sports tend to sell fashion trainers, there is loads of information on the web, try searching running gait, bit complicated, are you neutral an over or under pronator, you can go into a running shop and get a video analyses but be careful, I
I think I’m such an amateur I’m going to just go for neutral gait rather than get s full assessment as that is out of my price bracket! But I’m def convinced I need some better ones...
I quite agree- and what I’m wearing are definitely not fashion trainers- lol. But I suspect they are a bit rubbish on the support front a going to get a new pair of decent ones today.
Go to a good running store - tell them what your expected mileage is, and they will point out appropriate shoes to you and fit them (this is the most important bit - getting the right fit). Make sure you walk around a bit in the shoes as different manufacturers use different lasts; better running shoe manufacturers us different lasts for men and women.
Buy real running shoes (e.g., Nike, ASSCS, Brooks) not fashion trainers. If there is one place in your running wardrobe to invest, it is your shoes.
All the manufacturers make a range of good shoes but for a new runner with low mileage, the $70-100 shoes are more than adequate.
