Time to get back to it!

If you’re the kind of person who follows my ramblings about feelings and parenthood and anxiety and, very occasionally, running, you may have noticed that I’ve been very quiet lately.

Well, the reason is because the baby is here! This is obviously great and we are absolutely crazy about him. However, it does mean that I haven’t been running in a few weeks and the longer I leave it, the harder it will be to jump back in.

So, how do I do this? I was just getting to the really long runs and struggling a bit with them so I don’t think I can start with that straight away. I’m thinking I should go back a few weeks, maybe to the last run that had me truly feeling great and take it from there.

I’ve missed doing this, I’ve missed writing about it and I’ve really missed the community so I’m eager to get on with it. I think whatever I do it will be hard at first, especially since I’ve not been very active during my paternity leave. Pretty sure I put weight on...

So what do you think? What would you do?

First of all let me congratulate you on the birth of your baby's son, of course you will not always have the time to run. Once things settle down a little you may have the time to go for a run and perhaps resume the whole C25K program, remember the saying "baby comes first"

Thanks, yeah I haven’t completely figured out where the run will fit in yet, especially when I’m back at work. This is going to be difficult however I do it...

Congratulations on the new human 💕

Looking back you didn't like week 6 so how about jumping in at wk5 again? I've just come back from 2 1/2 weeks of not running so totally get where you are at. I REALLY didn't want to run tonight but gave myself a metaphorical slap. I was surprised at how ok it was (not easy but not awful and off putting). Running mojo restored 🤗

If you can't face running then stick your trainers on and brisk walk for 30 mins. Get back into the swing of 3 times a week whatever speed you go.

Think of it as parenting preparation as in a blink of an eye your little bundle will be mobile and you'll need to be quick on your feet 😁

I'm totally convinced you've got this! Happy running 💪💪👍

Yeah I’m thinking I should look back to when I last felt good about a run and repeat that week, maybe even keep repeating that week until my stamina is back to where I want it. I’m not in a hurry to get to the end of this, ultimately I want exercise that makes me feel good so I’m considering taking the whole thing slowly, especially since a lot of my energy will already be taken up by work and parenting and late nights! I’ll still push myself, you have to really, but the priority is to get some kind of exercise and feel good.

Congratulations!

I think under the circumstances back to the last comfortable... normally I’d say go for the run you were due to run, but I’ve done sleep deprivation!! Ease back in to it.

Next run is meant to be 25 minutes, I do not have that in me! I’ll jump back a bit and see what works. I’m not looking to challenge myself right now, I’ve got enough of that right now! I can push myself later on when I’ve settled into my new life a bit more

Yeah... so either go back... or just go run 15... it’s not on plan, but that could keep you ready to get back in at 20?

Preserved_Moose profile image

Maybe but I think I need to build up to it again, at least a little

Where you feel you’re at is gonna be good... you gotta feel great when you start.

Hey... I didn’t ask... pink or blue? Or gender neutral yellow, I’m a modern guy!

Preserved_Moose profile image

Blue! We’re modern too but we still like the old pink or blue tradition and if he changes his mind later in life then we’ll support him. Incidentally his older brother’s favourite colour happens to be pink!

UnfitNoMore profile image

Well... it’s not a very long tradition apparently it used to be pink for a boy (red is a power colour and said man) and blue was for girls because of Mary... before that most babies wore white (because we had big families and hand-me-downs and the colours faded so nobody really cared)

So 2 lads now? I’m guessing older brother is happy! They’re both blessed with a good set of parents too.

Great news! 😸

Ease into it. Maybe do 1 run from week 3, 1 run from week 4, then back on week 5 and progress from there?

We’ll see, not sure how to do this yet

Yay, congratulations on your baby boy! A life changer alright! 👶 😀

As regards your running, I like your idea of going back to the last run you really enjoyed. You might breeze through it, in which case you can continue the programme where you left off, or you might need to repeat that run a few times.

There’s no rush, just do what feels great for you. I’m sure you’ll smash it, however you proceed! 😀😀

Thanks, takes a lot of getting used to but we’re loving it! I was not prepared for just how tired I would be though, it really hits you out of nowhere!

I hope this approach works, I hope I don’t need to start over completely because I want to get a decent amount of running in when I get the chance. I may try one today between school runs...
