I think people usually recommend Garmin watches. I've just bought a forerunner 35. Not pretty but does what I need it to. Cost £120. Sold my fitbit, didn't really get on with it to track runs. You can spend more for a different model or look on eBay for a second hand one?? 😁

Why not simply use runkeeper.com/ on your phone? That's what I do.

Thanks, I use starva but I find it difficult to look at it whilst I’m running. Eg I ran 2.9 miles today but would have kept going if I could have seen that I only had .1 of a mile to reach 3 Miles!

Yes, me too. Several varieties of distance and/or time intervals as I remember. If you set them all the app would probably never shut up!

I use a Fitbit Surge and it works fine and syncs to Strava but I wouldn’t go out of my way to claim it’s better or worse than competitors. I bought it when I was walking a lot but not yet running. You probably want something with its own GPS rather than relying on a connection with your phone. I’ve never used Garmin but I’m told they don’t have a touchscreen and that might actually be an advantage in cold or wet weather when a touchscreen might take the huff.

Decide what features you want and look avoid paying for features you don’t want.

I’m looking at a TomTom Spark. Friend of mine has one and it links with Strava. The one I’m looking at also has the ability to store up to 500 songs for me to listen to on the earphones 👍🏻

I bought a garmin forerunner 235 and its fab in terms of being able to easily read stats while on the run. I had a fitbit alta. The garmin is rubbish at sleep recording in comparison but I think the better running support is probably what we're here for!

Another vote for Garmin ForeRunner 235!

I really like my fitbit Ionic, use it for tracking walking and outside skating (not allowed to run outside yet so not tried it for running) Had a fitbit surge before and that was ok for running got a better GPS than others I ran with using their phones!

Can't tell you about Garmin as not had one myself as my fitbit does all I need it to and more.

Hope that helps a little

My lovely friend gave me her old Garmin Forerunner 25 and it has transformed running for me. I would definitely look for a second hand one, they seem phenomenally expensive new.

Thanks everyone, after reading your advice and chatting to a helpful chap in Up &Runningbin Cheltenham, I’ve ordered a Garmin Forerunner 35, the updated version of the 235. Happy running everyone.
