I like MapMyRun and Strava (I use both!).

Both Mapmyrun and Strava have free options.

Both the Apps mentioned are very good. The are also other such as Endomondo and Runtastic etc. It all depends on how much accuracy and detail you want/need.

If you really want the 'best' way then a GPS watch is the way to go. If you will be taking your phone with you anyway then a free app is certainly the best value and least faff.

I’ve used map my runs for a long time. It’s my personal preference. Strava is also a good, respectable app to use.

Many thanks for all the helpful replies - I'll give it a go with one of the free apps and see how I get on.

I use the Nike + run app. It has some glitches, but when all is working, it shows you route, pace and splits. You can set it to metric or US. You can also go in and select a distance to run, how many minutes you want to run or set a pace to run. I will usually start it with my runs and then I can compare each time I run the same run.

I'm in an "Old Skool" phase at the moment. Tracking your runs? Buy yourself a lovely Moleskine notebook (other brands are available) and record each of your runs with a pencil. You won't get speed, or pace, or a little map of where you've been. But you can record the date, time, duration of your run, what the weather was like, who you saw, any smells or sounds or new views. And it is much easier to browse through and see your progress. And won't need to be recharged, ever. Record the date when you saw the first snowdrop, or when the field was ploughed/sown/harvested.

I'm using a Garmin running watch, and regret not recording the day I startled a deer, or the occasion I was running through a wood and disturbed a couple: she had obviously 'felt the urge to sit down' ;-0 and he'd gallantly laid on his back to prevent her getting muddy. Sorry. TMI.
