Feeling bad for not running ??!! 😕

I’ve not ran for around a week due to my silly knee injury. I was at first just carrying on running as it wasn’t too bad but also wasn’t improving. I’ve had a week off and it’s starting to feel better.

I did start to feel bad for not running as I saw a lady out for a jog this morning plus with it being a beautiful sunny morning. Does anyone else feel like this when they don’t run in a while?

I’m worried I will struggle when I get back to it.

Thanks DB

I know exactly how you feel. Most weeks family demands mean I only get out twice and I do feel disappointed in myself and life. But the programme isn’t just about running: it’s about healthy behaviour, so other forms of exercise are good too. If your knees are still a worry, why not swim or try something like yoga or tai chi to work on suppleness and stamina ? Hope you’re back out there soon x

in reply to ButtercupKid

Thank you! I’m the same. I struggle due to family demands that’s why I usually have to go out before anyone is up. I was thinking of trying to cycle as I’ve heard that’s low impact? I presume running is classed as high impact? I’m not sure. I’d love to do a yoga class as previously mentioned in other posts but I have very little free time 🙄

Get a DVD ? I bought a tai chi one in a charity shop - haven’t had time to watch it yet though 😆

I know the feeling. When I had some knee soreness I did shorter runs and was ready to stop if the soreness got worse.

Doing strengthening exercises works – I did these for a week and my knee was fine after that:

in reply to Flyingred

I might start back with shorter runs just to see how everything feels. There is no point in me making an injury worse or even getting another one. I will have a look at those exercises. Thank you!

I feel envious but not "bad".

Resting and recuperating are crucial aspects of listening to your body and making sure you give yourself a chance to fully recover if injured.

You lose next to no condition in the first couple of weeks and then it is only slow loss, but do take it easy when starting back to make sure you don't exacerbate your injury.

Yeah, it’s normal... I sat a couple of weeks out and it was awful. Sounds like you’ll be back soon though... and that comeback run feels even more amazing than regular runs.

in reply to UnfitNoMore

Yeah I hope it will!! I think a couple more days off then I will get back to it nice and steadily.

Sounds good... test that knee out gently at first. Good luck

in reply to UnfitNoMore

Thank you!! I sure will do. I’m thinking about maybe going on a light bike ride.

You're doing the right thing! And i don't think it will impact your performance severely. After all it's not a race, there is no deadline for something.

I understand the annoyance though...

...

(i have to confess, my worry when something prevents me from running is if i'll laze off and never get back to it!!- which is silly cos with c25k i have changed my attitude towards exercizing!!)

in reply to Mayanow

Thank you.

I know how you feel Dave, especially as this weather is picture perfect for running. 🍂🍂☀️☀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃🏃, but your absolutely doing the right thing waiting until your knee is better.

I took just a week off with my foot, which was hard enough, but it’s fine now and I knew what the problem was. With a knee tweak/injury you could be off for months if you run too soon and exacerbate the problem. You’re wise not pushing it. Have you seen your GP to see what you’re dealing with, and have you had a gait analysis? 🏃🏃

I really hope you’re back up and running soon. It takes a while to lose fitness, so you should be fine. 😀

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Yeah I’ve had the gait analysis. Not been to GP yet. I should probably do that next? I think the issue may have originally started when I was running in walking trainers 🤦🏻‍♂️ my own silly fault I know.

Isn’t that always the way? My PF started the same way. Ok trainers, but no good for me at all. Just wish I’d had a gait analysis early on, and also wish I hadn’t clobbered my foot doing yoga, making it flare up again.

Yes, pop to the GP, then at least you’ll know what you’re dealing with. Good luck. 😀

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Yeah. You sound like your someone who knows what your talking about. I’m still up for you the yoga classes. Just wish I had time for a class. I’ve done a couple of the videos on YouTube but I guess it’s best to be there so you can physically see how things are done and take in the atmosphere

I do all my yoga at home actually, although I’ve had some pointers from my daughters who are expert yogis! I find it helps with flexibility and strength - just as long as you make sure there are no armchairs in the way to thwack your toes on like I did! 🙄😅

in reply to cheekychipmunks

Oh. I thought you went to a class!! Yeah. Not so relaxing when your busting your toes on furniture 😬

I was out of it for several weeks due to my knee, I rested until it didn't hurt then ran again and it hurt again!! In my case I needed a sports physio to identify the cause and then find a fix. Then I started the whole thing again, I've just got in from week 6 run 3.

Do you know what is causing your knee problem ?

in reply to Jell6

Not sure. I probably should get it checked out. Did you get a referral from a GP first? The heel of the foot on the same side also aches so I assume they are somehow connected?? I’m not sure. Standard bloke trying to sort it myself 🤷🏻‍♂️

No, I found a local sports physio with good reviews!!

I think the first appointment, which was a long one was £60, following appointments were £40, in total I spent £180, which is a fair bit, but I probably would still be waiting to see one on the NHS.

I did ask a physio at work, but she couldn't offer any suggestions, sports physiotherapy is very specialised, they know their stuff!

in reply to Jell6

I thought the same regarding the waiting times. There is one in the next town near us that I might try out. Hopefully they can shed some light on it and ways to get it sorted.

😊. I think that's a good plan.

in reply to Jell6

😊 thanks for the help. Sometimes I’m a bit unsure. So it’s good to ask people who may have been or be in the same position. Did you say you started the C25k from the start again?

Jell6 profile image

Yes, it seemed the best way, my problems didn't happen until about a month after I completed the programme, my physio thought building up slowly with the correct trainers was the way to go, to reduce the injury risk. 🤞so far so good.

It will depend on the problem, and how long you have to rest for, in my case it was about 2 months.

Let us know how you get on 😊

in reply to Jell6

I will do. Hopefully the physio won’t be too painful 😂. I’ve always heard they aren’t that delicate!! So what week are you up to now? I don’t want to really start it again if I really don’t have to.

Week 7 next run😊

in reply to Jell6

Ah your not doing bad then! I bet your times and pace are really good!!

Haha, ...I expect they are better than the first time.

I would like to be on, or close to, the 5k when I end week 9, but I haven't made it a goal, just getting to 30 minutes without my knee issue recurring will be great for me.

in reply to Jell6

I totally agree. It’s better for us be out there and exercising than sat on our butts!
