What should I wear when it gets colder?
SIMPLE QUESTION SERIES: What should I wear when... - Couch to 5K
SIMPLE QUESTION SERIES
At the moment I'm currently wearing a combination of leggings, wicking t, merino base layer l/s, track suit type top and windproof jacket with zip off arms.
Once it gets colder I'll be considering adding a cap, or other hat, liner gloves, buff, liner socks, base layer legs, even another top layer
After graduation (so when you're no longer walking during a run) you can apply the 10degree rule.
Dress for a temperature 10 degrees centigrade warmer than the weather.
Here are some examples:
Weather forecast tells you it is 20 degrees. Dress for 30 degrees, so running vest and shorts (and suncream).
Weather forecast tells you it is 10 degrees. Dress for 20 degrees, so running top and shorts/capris.
Weather forecast tells you it is 0 degrees. Dress for 10 degrees, so running top, jacket, running tights. If you are prone to cold extremities, then also wear gloves, or hat, buff as you think necessary.
Yes, that is correct. If there is frost on the ground, you'll need a long-sleeve running top and a jacket. Not loads and loads of thick bulky layers. And if you leave the house and think Ouch that's cold then you are correctly dressed. Running in the cold but sweating under loads of layers is to be avoided. If you follow the 10 degree rule, you'll quickly warm up and feel comfortable.
Now, that sounds sensible. Thanks for that. I'm a lapsed graduate who is back to W5R3 (tomorrow) and my wife is at W2R3, so I shall dress a little more warmly until I'm at the no walking stage. Not too far off now, and as it's getting cooler your advice is very welcome indeed.
Personally, I wear the same as I wear in the summer. If it is particularly cold or raining heavily then I will put on a hoodie, but I will discard it after a few minutes of running, which is okay if there is somewhere you can do ths, as once my temperature increases from running I don't want to overheat.
Layers are good, but just remeber when you remove them you need to either carry or put them somewhere safe. Its really a bit of trial and error.
Thanks. Maybe a small running specific rucksack would be useful. I shall take a peek in the shops and on-line.
Swimming goggles a Noddy hat and some slippers!
It was 3deg this morning for my w3r1 run. I wore merino wool socks, thicker leggings, a t-shirt, fleece jacket, gloves and a buff around my hair/ears.
As it gets colder I will wear the buff around my neck add a toque (Canadian for winter hat), switch the t-shirt for a long-sleeve base layer add a wind proof jacket and eventually light joggers over my leggings. I haven't run in weather that required more than that yet... but I plan to this year, it may require some further thought.
