W5 R2 still having breathing issues

What is wrong with me! I’m halfway through the programme and still haven’t cracked the breathing part. Completed today’s run without any problems, ran really slowly but still breathing really hard. I’m pretty fit anyway, no medical issues, not really overweight (although losing a couple of lbs would be nice of course), really at my wits end to know what to do to solve this.

I was looking this up as last time I ran (a few years ago before today) I found I was forgetting to breathe while actually running. Most posts suggest one breath in for 2 strides which I tried today. It helped once I was in my stride.

You finished the run... you’re still alive... that breathing is ok! Just let it happen... find something else to focus on during your run... it’s a gremlin making you focus on the breathing... kick it out of your head. Relax before you run... maybe meditate... maybe play something in your ears next time that takes your attention and distracts you... it will be just fine. Keep up the good work.

Yeah maybe that would help, I do feel like I need to relax a bit

I use Headspace a lot... it’s has got me though a lot of stress... maybe it can help you relax. Your body is ready for the next run, it’s all about the mind.

If you cannot speak clear ungasping sentences as you run, then you are going too fast, for this stage of your running career.

Slow down until you can.......... you will get faster as you get fitter.

I’d like to go slower but I’d actually be walking, should I just keep repeating the run until I get better?

You can do a running action that covers the ground more slowly than walking and if that is what you have to do to develop your technique then go for it.

If you are gasping for breath then you cannot provide the oxygen required by your muscles and you will tire quickly.

Yes I’m not listening to anything at the moment as I discovered my headphones were causing the audio to skip but maybe if I don’t quit I’ll look into some wireless ones

There’s this thing that used to be called ‘exercise induced asthma’ that I suspect I might have! I really notice it on evenings when it’s cold and I’m doing a 20 min plus run. I’m off to the docs for a chat. I already have hay fever/ allergies that mean I can’t breathe in the morning til the drugs kick in.

Not what you're looking for?
