Well my August running took a bit of a tumble due to extreme migraines and the hot, hot, hot sun. I agree that it seems dreadful to complain about the heat now that it's getting cooler and we’ll all want the heat back, but there you go 40 degrees plus made getting out a tough ask.
To recap I want to run 2018km in 2018 to raise £2018 for Alzheimer’s Research and August I sort of let myself down, although a humdinger 6 day migraine didn’t help matters.
For the first time since I started I did fewer than 150kms in the month. It’s not a game over scenario, just I lost mileage at a time when I hoped to be keeping momentum. But the upside is now that cooler weather is here, I appear to have found the pesky migraine trigger and have not suffered from one for three weeks. The downside is that the migraine trigger seems to be HRT, so now I’ve dumped the drugs, I am hot permanently regardless of the actual temperature. Still, you can't win them all.
I’ve run just under the 1500km mark for the year, and I reflect that just over a year ago I graduated alongside such luminaries as rolysmate and Mummycav , who continue to do the miles, as does my speedy friend Razouski and MrsT82 who continues to amaze me with her commitment and the fact she’s recruited her teeny tiny daughter to run a 10k!
So many of you help me with messages of support, and have donated to the cause too, it’s truly a fab community.
I can’t tell you how much help that is, and as my little goat hooves continue to trot out the kms, all that remains is for me to wish you all happy running. As part of my community pay back - I am on the case on the next Retro Runners Play list - and a new post on that topic will follow soon.
That’s pretty amazing stuff... you’re not far from schedule I guess as I’d run most of it spring and autumn. Not that it’s making much difference to you now. Keep on running, I’ll have to see if I’ve any spare pennies!
Thank you, the thing I now realise is I was always going to have a bad month, I just didn’t know exactly when it was going to happen. I am hoping that September’s milder weather will help me clock up a few more than my plan, to make up for the August Deficit - well it’s not a deficit as such, because I am still ahead cumulatively - just not as far as I had planned. Still you never know what you can do until you give it a try... I still pinch myself thinking that I’m a newish runner doing this, and it’s all because of here!
Yes I know what you mean, I track all mine on the Map My Run ‘Run the Year’ Challenge (which is actually 1018km in 2018) but the thing that astonishes me is I think people cheat on the tracking ... some claim to have done over 4000km already , although they have no photos and you can't see what runs they’ve actually done..., so maybe it's the old internet fakery again! Or maybe they are all ultra runners!
Most ultra runners don’t clock huge mileage daily either though. My friend stepped up from marathon and if anything he runs less miles. He does less speed work too which was his issue. I know one guy who runs a half marathon every day before work, so that’s 5 x 13 and about 6 on a Saturday for parkrun (his warmup is obscenely long and fast) but as far as he’s said he takes sundays off. He’s a unique guy at a parkrun with 350 runners a week, nobody clocks anywhere near his mileage.
Sorry to hear about the migraines. I have nasty ones too, but seem to have them under control. My sympathies that you're having to come off HRT and join me in the Hot Flush Brigade. (I'm not able to have HRT because of the breast cancer... so we'll just have to put up with being hot and sweaty all through the autumn and winter as well as in summer when it's actually hot.)
I'm looking forward to the next Retro Runner's playlist, although after seeing Mumma Mia Hear We Go Again I decided to put together an Abba Playlist which I really enjoyed surprisingly.
Hope September's running is more successful for you.
Hi - the HRT is an irritation - but I’d much rather be hot than have the migraines. I’d never experienced them before and anybody who has them has my deepest sympathies, they are horrid. Perhaps we can do a Hot Flush Run for C25Kers similarly affected? Yes Abba is on my to do list too... because although cheesy they are quite good for pace I find.
Have a good September too - back in November if we have an olive harvest or October if we don’t....
OMG Jan...luminarie??!!! Moi??!! I am flattered, honestly, that means so much to me...as do you & the inspiration, sheer grit & determination that you have...you are one tough cookie and are living, breathing proof that running can change lives...not only the runners in your case..you are my hero...I hope we meet one day xxxxxxxx
Hi Mummycav - well you’ve just gone even higher in my heroine stakes as you’ve donated to me.Thanks so much what a lovely lovely gesture - and you liked my post too. It’s like having a mini fan club!!! We should arrange a run shouldn’t we - but can we make it next year... when my hooves have rested a bit?
Take care and happy running through the soon to be crunchy Autumn leaves
Ohhh, you are MORE than welcome Hidden ...I am your NUMBER ONE fan!! I love reading all about it...you are just amazing....and yes, next year, give the hoofs chance to resemble feet again eh??!!! Lol xxxxx
Hi Polly - well after all the advice I’ve had about diet, triggers, magnesium deficiencies and a host of other things all of which I’d worked through, it was Mr JCR who put his metaphoric finger on it. He pointed out they’d started more or less a year ago and got consistently worse over time and he suggested I just stop the tablets for one month, just to see if they were the culprit, and hey ho - guess what no migraines.
Now I guess that may be coincidence but as I never had experienced them ever and to be honest my food and alcohol intake is in general a migraine sufferers bible for all the things to avoid, but it seems to be working.
Thanks for the encouragement - just clocked over 1500kms today - only 518km to go!!!
