From my very limited experience, I'm not sure that "cheap" and "running shoes" are three words that sit together easily!
I spent £100 on some new ones from a running shop and they did make a lot of difference. A friend went to John Lewis (of all places) and picked up a pair of Asics for about £50 I think, so worth checking out if there's a store near you.
But I'd deffo go for somewhere where they stick you on the treadmill to see how you run.
I’m in the same situation, and asked for some recommendations on here as well and most people recommended going to a proper running shop! I’m planning on doing so as soon as I can afford it, it sounds like it will be worth it though!
There really is no recommendation we can give. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for you injuring yourself in a pair of shoes I recommended. Gait analysis seems to be the only way to go unless you’re trail running in which case pretty much all shoes are neutral. Regardless they’re in the same price range as road shoes anyway. You may find you get lucky as end of season sales will be starting, and there’s usually something on discount in these stores.
If you have a list of shoes for you, you may be able to save a few pounds online... just make sure you’ve tried them all on and know which one you want... take 5 minutes and look at the running sites to see the cheapest prices.
I was planning to get good trainers once i graduated but realised proper trainers are VERY important. I understand your money worry but if you get injured it will cost more than just money!
I was aiming for midrange but then i tried on the adidas boost and fell in love! Thought about it for days, tried many on but that was it. I got them and i am VERY VERY happy with my choice.
I too opted for the Adidas ones and purchased the solar boost ones. They are quite narrow but incredibly comfortable - haven’t looked back - positively bounce on my runs
If you look at pinned posts (on the right) there’s one called FAQ Posts from Iannodatruffe about half way down there are two links, sorry Imcant link right now, about which shoes and gait analysis both have lots of useful info.
If you go to a proper running shop and tell them your budget they should be able to help. There’s usually last year’s model or unpopular colours available at a discount. As with all clothes, different brands and even updated models size differently so don’t be tempted to buy online without knowing that particular shoe will fit (some you only need to go up half a size, others can be up,to two sizes bigger needed). Once you know what size and type of shoe you need and suits that is when shopping online is ok (imho)
