Think I’ve gone off Garmin (and the lumpy bra saga)

Think I’m the sort of person who likes a plan! Was 0.19 short of my 5k on my last run so the plan was to repeat the run but add a circuit of the boating pond before I set off. Sorted. Surely I’d see 5 this time. Started not so well. It was threatening rain so although I’d taken me arm thingy so that I didn’t have to hold my phone all the way I decided it might mean my phone got wet (not an ideal fit) so what to do with the thingy and the glasses I’d forgotten to leave in the car? Left them at the base of a tree for my return! Then found the only podcast I had was one I’d listened to already. Twice! Ok - just Sarah it was. Just tucked my phone inside my sport bra and hoped it didn’t get too sweaty or look too lumpy.

I digress but one podcast informed me that the first sport bra was made around 1977 when jogging became popular. A woman was complaining to her husband about her lack of support when her husband clasped his jock strap to his chest and said this would work. The first sport bra was 2 jock straps sewn together!! That’s according to the QI elves who produce ‘No Such Thing as a Fish’ podcast anyway.

Didn’t feel it started well (heavy legs) but at least that meant I would be slower as many people had suggested. Got to my turning point so once I’m pointing home I’m usually confident I’ll make it. Had to stop to re-tie my trainer. Was that because I’d read the stop or not stop debate? Decided it wasn’t an option so I’d allow it this once. Note to self - double knot next time. Ran past the 30 min to get back to my stash under the tree. Felt fine. The expected rain hadn’t materialised but a drizzle helped my cool down walk (see photo). Off home to see my progress. Waited for the data to download. 5? 5.1 even?

4.78

REALLY?

I’ve gone off Garmin!!

p.s. I’m still very happy / amazed that I can do this so I’m not as stressed as this might sound!

Loving the bra stories this week ladies 😂

I too listen to fish... keeps me just that little bit insane.

Good run... I think Garmin are just trying to spur you on, obviously it’s wrong, so that’s my explanation! Keep up the good work.

Great to meet another fish fan. Makes me giggle as puff along.

I must try running to it sometime... of course I may hit my biggest fear and actually wet myself on the trail then.

That’s so annoying! Try using an app too on your phone to compare the distance. MapMyFitness, Strava. See what they say 👍🏽 keep running 👌🏽

Gave up on mapmyrun and Strava early. In 20 minutes (different days) I recorded 0.3 miles and 16k! At least Garmin was a bit closer!! I’ll keep on trying - just not too hard.

What a nightmare! I’ve never had an issue with anything 🤔

I put it down to weak gps but I’m not sure.

Eeep, I've been assuming my arm thingy will keep my phone dry, except for the fact I need to keep taking it out to do things, because the screen goes dark when it's inside and I can't wake it up.

i've gone off Strava! I challenged myself to cover 150 miles this month on foot, whether running or walking and need to send evidence to get my Race at your Pace medal (yeah, I know, but I need lots of carrots!). So after a drenched walk out this morning to marshal at the Parkrun turnround point and slightly drier walk back, my records based on Fitbit GPS data showed I had 7.5 miles left to do to reach the goal. Unfortunately, I can't get a proper log for GPS walks/runs from Fitbit (don't want to use Fitbit steps as they overestimate distance quite a bit). However, the GPS data fed into Strava showed me a monthly log that said I still need to do 10+ miles. Arrrgh! It seems Strava rounds down everything or performs some other evil witchery on the GPS data.

BTW, wondering if that is Singleton boating lake which is about a mile from my home.

Technology can be so fickle! Isn’t it a worry that we rely on it for absolutely everything. I’ve a fight to USA next month 😱. I’m up in Moffat this week. ‘Home home’ - where I grew up (17 years) not ‘home’ where I’ve lived for 33 years! Cold wet and windy this afternoon.

Aaagh that must be a bit irritating! Like, really? 🤨! You’ve done a brilliant run regardless! I’d try out a different app and see how you go! Well done!! 😁❤️

Have to admit I’m very pleased at how it’s going. I’m avoiding hills so much though I’m thinking of starting on W1R1 again up and down a nearby hill!! It’s not very big so week 1 should be ok but it will be very tedious after that. You’re doing a marvellous job too. Love the shorts.

I use mapmyrun and get voice overs giving distance and split times so it’s easy to know when I hit 5k

Incidentally my often identical runs often hit 5k at slightly different places - I think this is down to inaccuracies in mobile

phone GPS - I don’t have a Garmin but use a Fitbit charge 2 that talks to the phone

I knew we were talkin fairly small differences so thought that would be the case. Mapmyrun gave me such a ridiculous distance for a 20 min run once (0.3 miles) that I deleted it! Also when I used it early on it interrupted Sarah which I thought was very rude!! Maybe I’ll give it another go. Thanks

Technology is great when it works, when it doesn't it's dull! Anyway, you did it - 4.78k rounds up to 5k 😎

Oh I forgot about rounding up! I’ll use that. Often!! Cheers
