W3R2 - Sore knees - soft tissue, not joints

Hi, I have found that the soft tissue around my knees has been hurting this week. Not a sharp pain more of an ache. I am quite over weight at 14 stone. Does anyone else experience this? And does anyone have any tips / treatment suggestions please?

I’ve had a bit of that on and off throughout the programme. It’s probably the tendons etc getting worked and not being used to it.

I treat my achey legs with a hot radox salts bath and, if they remain too sore, I take an extra rest day.

Listen to your body - it’s important for avoiding injury.

I was getting niggly knees. They were okay during and immediately after a run, but later in the evening they were uncomfortable, niggly and achey. I treated myself to a gait test and new shoes, the niggly knees went away.

Running on uneven surfaces can be hard on them too. Try a treadmill, it has a flat even surface, that helps.

Gold luck, remember to listen to your body and allow an extra day off to recover if you need it.

I had sore knees when I started but as I have carried on, they have got stronger and no longer cause any problems. You could have a look at the 'strength and flex' programme or try some squats on your rest days

Hi Helen please can you say where to find the strength and flex program?

Ibuprofen an hour before running. They’ll sort themselves out soon enough. Very common 👍🏽

Hi, I had the same too - I've just done W3R3. Someone recommended this:

nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/k...

..which I've done twice a day and before and after running, for the last two runs - as well as running as slow as I could today. It's working for me as although my knees are a bit achey still, they are better. I guess it makes sense to strengthen your knees for all that pavement pounding, especially if you're like me with a pretty sedentary job!

hello! Sounds pretty common, aches (don't run through pain though). I would second the suggestion of the knee exercises which Job500 has posted the link to. Also - have a look at the FAQ POST How to run C25K ( healthunlocked.com/couchto5... ) and take note about the bit about shoes! Getting on for week 4 you should consider - if you haven't already - having proper running shoes, fitted after gait analysis probably. My knees thanked me for my running shoes :)

Good luck, keep running, keep posting!
