Graduation Thoughts

Well, I finally completed my week 9 run 3 this morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning and instead of running local roads as I usually do I took the car to the park and did a few laps there. My ulterior motive for that was that it's where the weekly Parkrun takes place and, yes, I'm already thinking about giving it a go. If you had asked me on week 1 if I thought I'd complete the 9 weeks I'd have answered 'not sure'. If you'd asked me week 4 or 5 I'd have said 'hmm'. By week 8 and 9 that had all changed, having completed the longer runs I'd have given you a confident 'yes'. I found the change from short runs to longer runs was hard going, but then once you push past the mental block and the tiredness/pain you realise that you can do it and finishing becomes easier. Anyway, this morning's run went great, and I found it relatively easy, in fact I could have kept going for longer. I completed just under the 5k, but I'm not disappointed because I'll have that nailed very soon.

Thanks Sandie, and yes, it does get addictive. I now miss running on my rest days but I usually go for a brisk walk or a cycle to compensate

Thanks Alan, I'm greatly enjoying the sense of achievement. 9 weeks ago I wasn't sure I could do it, so glad I stuck with it.

Yes I remember those same thoughts of uncertainty when I started out. The progression in just 9 weeks is an amazing achievement and one to be very proud of.

Feels great Mike. I think once you get past week 4/5 and start into the longer runs you realise that running for 30 minutes is a real possiblility and not just a fantasy.

Well done! Good going! If you register online before going to a park run they will give you a time. You have to print out a bar code and you get that scanned and then your time appears on the website. There were guest runners from other places in the country and other countries when I went to my first park run last week. Very friendly and I got tips on running up hillπŸ‘

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toBaddieThePirate

Wait, there's a hill????

BaddieThePirate profile image
BaddieThePirateGraduateβ€’ in reply toThe_Fat_Controller

I suppose it depends on the park... they said run up on tippy toes (after I'd finished the run so will have to try that out next time).

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toBaddieThePirate

Sounds like a good tip, thanks. My local park has a few minor slopes, not really what you'd call hills. For my graduation run I did a mock Parkrun, 2 1/2 laps instead of 3 (to fit in with the C25K timings). I reckon I'd manage it in 35-40 mins and I've signed up so I'll give it a go soon.

Thanks for the champers Ang, would love to indulge but do you know how may calories are in a glass of that, I'd have to run 10K to burn them off lol.

Congratulations Paul! You'll be surprised at how well you'll do on the Park run so go for it!

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toEqui-geek

My local Parkrun is 3 full laps of the park, I completed 2 1/2 this morning. The only reason I didn't do the rest was because Sarah Millican told me it was time for my 5 minute warm-down walk. Seriously though, I'm pretty sure I could have done the full 5k.

Ooh I’ve managed to avoid hills so far. You can always try walking up the hill the first time especially as you will still be consolidating. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

I must admit, I felt a certain kind of freedom on my first PG run last night. No Jo Wiley, no running playlist. Selected an album, switched on Strava and ran. Felt like a proper grown-up runner!

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toDralimc

First run with no Sarah Millican, and I kinda missed the encouragement. Still had the music going though and used the GPS exercise function in the Pacer app. It can be set to call out times and distances at intervals you choose so you get '5 minutes, distance 1.5 km', '10 minutes, distance 2.3km' etc.

Dralimc profile image
DralimcGraduateβ€’ in reply toThe_Fat_Controller

I may try pacer app, as strava doesn’t do time intervals. It’s weird isn’t it, letting go?πŸ™„

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toLorijay

My username is a bit misleading Lorijay. The guys who used to work for me called me that because I was fat and their boss. I'm no longer their boss (took early retirement) and I'm also (pleased to say) an awful lot slimmer.

regards

That sounds great! You must have a fab pace! Well done! πŸ₯‚πŸΎπŸŽ“πŸŽ“

The_Fat_Controller profile image
The_Fat_ControllerGraduateβ€’ in reply toTasha99

Thank you. I don't feel I'm fast, and I do more of a jog than a run. The five minute warm up and warm down walks at each end mess with the pace in the app (it just works out distance over time) so next time I think I'll start and finish the app only during the running part to get a better idea of how fast (or slow ) I'm going.

Tasha99 profile image
Tasha99Graduateβ€’ in reply toThe_Fat_Controller

Well you didn’t need to think about pace during c25k but now you can - if you want to that is! Well done πŸ‘ŒπŸ½
