Hi I just completed my first session and had very sore shin splints and cramps in one leg- I walked off the cramps and my shins feel okay now - I'd like to know if anyone else experiences this and how long it lasted for? Many thanks

I used to get shin splints. A personal trainer watched at me run and saw I was having too much “heel strike”. What cured them pretty quickly for me was (a) landing “mid-foot” and then rolling through to push off the “pad” beneath my big toe and (b) doing exercises to strengthen my calves. Might help?

Hi Saffire. If you think it might be what melderfield suggests check out the above link in running technique. The website it comes from actually has loads of vids I’ve found useful.

Also going to a running equipment shop and getting a gait analysis and maybe a new pair of running shoes might help. (Although you might want to leave the shoes a bit as you’re only just starting).

Good luck!

It is very common. To reduce impact, slow down, avoid heelstriking, keep footfall under your body not out in front, run on grass or treadmill, wear proper running shoes fitted after a gait analysis done at a specialist running shop.

The guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Take care.

brilliant thank you , this is really useful! I really don't want to injure myself, a few months ago i had to stop my first exercise regime as I strained my foot - then no sooner was I better from this, my hip and leg were inflamed from doing too much moving house. I've waited ages to be able to so something again so this should keep my from further injury!
