Shin splints

Morning All, 1st run last night and got terrible shin splints, started on the walking, eased a bit on the running, stopped within minutes of finishing. I am fit and work out regularly but haven't run for years, hence the reason I started this with a friend .( I will add I wear Heels nearly all the time and have muscular calf muscles) I don't want to give up so wondered if anyone has had the same problem? any suggestions and advice please

Hi maybe slow ur pace-and look into having a gait analysis done to make sure ur properly supported whilst running . They really do make a world of difference x

Hi, where can I get that done? I.m not sure if thats what I did in the store where I last bought running trainers ( that was years ago)

Look online as most sport shops don’t offer this service . I had to travel a few miles to get one but well worth it x

Congratulations for finishing the first run! I think that shin splints are inevitable at the beginning - it will disappear with time. Your body is rediscovering bits of itself that haven't been used for a while, so it may hurt. Make sure you have shoes with sufficient cushioning, and try not to overstride as it makes you land on your heel, which causes shin splints (and isn't much good for the rest of you, either).

Thanks, I hope it will be the first of many more, Have to confess I've never enjoyed running much as I get bored, but hoping to enjoy it more as running with a friend. My trainers are quite cushioned as I have a high instep, but might have to invest in another pair

The advice above is all good. There is plenty more in the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Slowing down, avoiding heelstrike, keeping footfall under your body and running on grass, alongside the all important running shoes can all help.
