It’s all gone a bit pear shaped.

I graduated nearly 3 weeks ago. I was ill when I graduated but as it was at a parkrun I was determined to do it, I then got a chest and viral infection so didn’t run for 2 weeks. I finally ran Sunday and only managed to run 3km in 25 minutes . The 2 weeks up to graduation I completed 3 x5kms in 38 minutes. I feel like I’ve so gone backwards. I’m still on antibiotics and antiviral meds so still not quite right but the real worry is that if I don’t go out and push myself to the 5km I ll end up giving it all up.

I thought this was gonna be the fun bit. Seeing the 5kms getting easier and preparing myself for the improvers 10k but it’s ending up the total opposite.

I also joined a challenge for charity and have to do 4x5kms by the end of May . I’m really worried that’s never gonna happen.

I’m definitely going out again tonight and just gonna push past the 3km and see what I can do. I’m just hoping I ll get my mojo back soon 😟

First of all, well done for graduating! It’s brilliant you are doing this for charity and it’s shows you have determination. It is very unfortunate that you became sick after it but don’t be too disheartened about your last 3km - at least you managed that when you’re still not 100%. This is just a blip and I’m sure the determination you initially had when starting this will creep back. You just need to make sure you’re better first. Looking after yourself is top priority. In regards to the 4x5km you have set out to do, you will find it in yourself it acjoeve this goal. Good luck!

Thank you . I guess I’m not taking into account how being ill is impacting. Rather than thinking this is me I should realise this is ill me and that’s different . Hopefully another week on the meds and I ll be fighting fit and that should still give me 3 saturday parkruns to complete my challenge x I just need to remember I will get that drive back when I’m better x

Don't try and push yourself if you are still on meds, you are likely to delay recovery. Give yourself a break. Do some nice gentle runs when you feel ready and then, when you are fully recovered do some consolidation runs. You still have plenty time to do the 4 x 5K during May.

I went out last night and decided to try some walk run walk to help until I’m better. I usually run 5k in about 38. I ran 2k walked 1k and ran final 2k . And I still finished in 41. It meant I chalked off 1 of my charity 5 Ks and I felt so much better that I managed to do a complete 5k, even if I did have to do a fast walk interval.

I will definitely use this again if I need to . It’s actually not the end of the world to do a bit of walking , especially if it means it helps you to continue your run. X
