On the advice of my son (a regular half-marathon runner) I apparently have to have a "gait analysis" before buying new running shoes. Will this hurt? Do I need an anaesthetic or oxygen? Should I have paramedics on speed dial?
Your gait is your walking style, based on the shape of your legs and feet.
By walking or jogging on a treadmill, your footfalls can be analysed to see how you land on your feet and where you could do with the most support. also based on what you want your shoes for (gym work, outdoor running, etc).
There is more to it than this, which I'm sure someone else will fill you in on.
So, in answer to your original question, there is nothing to worry about.
It will hurt - it’ll hurt the wallet... because the shoes are just the start...

I will invest in some decent shoes but until I manage week three, I doubt I'll go for the full kit. It may all come crashing down!

You are spot on to focus on your feet, they are your foundation for your running. Bad shoes can do lots of damage. Get the feet right and the running really improves!
