Ok... Guilty confession time: Have you ever had a bad run that was entirely your fault?
Today was Week 3 R2 for me. I did Week 3 R1 on a treadmill on Friday. Felt kind of good so rowed 5K afterwards. HMMMM. Then yesterday came around. Was a little tired but a good tired feeling rather than a broken feeling. Was working with mates in the library until around 9pm. Got home 9:30pm started my medical procedure that took until just after midnight. Got up 8 am and went for my run. Felt like lead. Then realises yesterday only ate at lunch time skipped dinner as was tired after medical procedure and again did not eat breakfast he morning. Literally consumed about 1500 (or two meals) calories since my run on Friday. Whoops. I completed said run but by got my pace per mile was like 2 minutes longer than normal. Lesson learnt.

Fuel, hydration and state of rest are things that runners slowly begin to appreciate as having major impacts on performance. More experienced runners adjust these parts of life to maximize their running, not just take them for granted.
Learning to run is so much more than learning to put one foot in front of the other.
