It's a question of ethics...

It's a question of ethics...

And I would appreciate some guidance from you lovely people, if you don't mind.

As some of you know I am 'running the year' that is 2018km in 2018.

To keep my motivation and interest high, I thought I could run London's Monopoly board and I report my progress on Jancanrun.com and on here from time to time.

Today I ran 10km and it wasn't a Monopoly run, but I came across Chancery Lane which I thought wcould count for the 'Chance' square. But here is my dilemma - today wasn't a Monopoly Board run, so am I allowed to count it or not?

Thanks a lot, for your thoughts.

Of course it counts! It'll be difficult enough as it is without restricting yourself to certain "Monopoly days". Is that 2018k all running? Or does walking count towards it? That's nearly 170k a month. The most I've ever run is 123k and it's tough running over 100 every month.

Walking doesn't count and I have to do a minimum of 5k a run. I know !! 'who on earth set themselves that challenge?'... but this complete fool did and as it's to raise cash for Alzheimer's I can't go back on them now. But I take your point on running that level is hard, and at present I am at cumulative deficit, but as I get stronger, I will claw it back. Thanks for the vote on it counting, that helps, I didn't want to feel as though I was cheating!

Blimey! That's nearly 40k a week. Every week. For a year! If you go out 4x a week that's 10k just about every time. I bow down to you in awe. Please don't injure yourself!

Thanks - it is a big deal, because before Christmas I was just doing over 20km, so I am winding it up slowly, am just about hitting 30km a week, and so in Summer it will need to be about 50kms... I am scared stiff of getting injured. Luckily when I am tired, I start running like Mrs Overall, and I always stop when that happens.

I'm doing 25-30 a week. I set myself a minimum of 20k a week in March last year and managed it pretty much until 2 weeks ago, when something happened to my knee. I think my maximum was 35 in one week and I know I physically couldn't do the mileage to get to 2018k (yet!). At the moment I'm heading for 1300 in a year - a 50% increase on that would wreck me!

So I will be cheering you all the way👍

Thanks for the support, I honestly didn't realise just how tough the doubling up would be. But it's for a good cause and one that is so personal, so I am hoping that keeps me on track. Frankly 1300 is a good number as you do need the time to do them. My 16km run last week took over 2 hours, so anybody running over the 25K in a week is committing a lot of time to it. Kudos to you!

I would say so.

Are you doing the London Winter Run - you could tick off three or four in one run!

I hadn't planned to, but I have done one complete side of the board now, the browns, pale blues, jail, Bank and all 4 train stations, so I'm quite happy with that. Next week is the 'orange' squares. But I will check out that London Winter Run, that might be a good idea anyway.

Reply

It is next Sunday so may be full but the route is on their web site. sounds like you've covered a few of the spots already tho'. Good plan. I often think of getting the train up to Blackfriars and running along the Thames a bit but it gets so crowded I may go mad trying

Yes the general entries are now closed and the charity entries a bit difficult for me to do, as I am committed to raising cash for Alzheimer's so feel it would be too hard to ask all my friends and family for cash for that as well as the Alzheimer's challenge. But you're right, it is a nice route! And I have run along the Thames but it is a bit of a pain really. Even in January, weekday afternoons, it's a zoo...

Eat well. Otherwise there will be none of you left at that rate. Wow you are amazing. I set myself a 5K everyday for January. But that included walking every second day. Everything counts. I wish you every success. Hat off to you.

Well you have nothing on my calves. I have Popeyes calves. Not from running, they are the ones God gave me, but they are massive.

I am sure you pulled out a 'Chance' card that said, 'Take advantage of your most recent experience of serendipity'.

So, there we are then: alles gut.

Give me a shout if you end up sent to jail: I have contacts ;)

Good luck. I can't imagine doing that much ever. (Especially as I have had to go back in the programme. It's a great idea but as a guide only. For that much running to do, every k should count. Keep going and you should be a property mogul by the end of the year. xx

Hi Jan, you're amazing and everything you're doing counts! Look at all the wonderful support you've got from the brilliant people in this forum. Where is the link to your justgiving page?! Good luck, you are truly inspirational.

Thank you for your encouragement too, it all helps get me out there every other day. I am running to a deficit in January, but will catch it up I hope by end of march, it's all a compromise between getting the kms done and not getting injured. So at present I am sticking to the not getting injured bit! Thanks for asking about my page - it is on btdonate, because apparently they take less money from you than JustGiving do. It can be found on:-

Thanks - tomorrow is Orange day...., still can't find and Electricity company in London. We may have to settle on me seeing an electrician's van!

Pay a £10 fine or take a Chance?

Did you run past a bookies? There's your Chance. And if you ran past one of those grit containers they have by the road that's your Community Chest.

Finding Free Parking in central London is going to be a bit more of a challenge...

Oh you have this thing sussed don't you, I hadn't thought about Community Chest at all, I had thought of looking for a Community Hall together with a place name that included Chest. But I have checked Free Parking is possible if you run on a Sunday, because the yellow lines don't count apparently!

Thanks for the tips - orange squares tomorrow! And I better keep an eye out for grit containers - although it doesn't often get that cold, so that may be a 10 km run all on its own!

Love the idea of Monopoly runs and it's such a great cause you are running for. I hope to join you and do the Paris board at some point! I just went onto your donation page and it says 'I am a UK tax payer'. Can we donate if we aren't do you know? (I live in France).

I think you can override the UK taxpayer thing as my friends Gerben and Jeanne who donated are Dutch, so it should be okay. Thank you so much for thinking of donating, and let me know when the Paris board is happening!

Absolutely yes! Later in the year you might run out of Monopoly places and need to run Ticket to Ride, twirl Looping Louis style, or we could draw you some exciting maps with Scrawl. Don't run Risk though - not worth it!! 😀

For sure I will run out of Monopoly places, going have to get creative, so Ticket to Ride maybe worth a punt.

Definitely yes. Or, maybe, no. If you get it wrong, you'll have to go straight to jail!

I think because the Chancery Lane sign was purely by chance, then that counts as serendipity. And as I passed Tower of London on my first brown square outing, then I think I have suffered enough and that must count as going to jail!
