Just wondering if many people train at home on a treadmill? I’ve been training outdoors so far (I’m only up to week 6) but bad weather has hampered my progress lately. My son has been asking for a treadmill for a little while. Is it something worth investing in? They seem pricey but I’ve seen some decent second hand offers. Thank you :)

Personally I would continue with the adventure outdoors but I’m not known to be a fan of those machines....!!

I love running outdoors but very frustrated by icy conditions at the moment :(

You will shortly be inundated with people telling you that treadmills, or 'dreadmills' as they will inevitably be called, are not a patch on running outdoors saying hello trees, hello sky etc. The joys of fresh air and the freedom of the open road and all that chiz.

Which is all good and true. However, in terms of learning to run, conditioning your legs and lungs, getting fit and burning calories, all that matters is that you are running. If running indoors on a treadmill means you can run more consistently and regularly, then that is the thing that works. What works is king.

Hi Julie, I’ve just signed up to a gym for the same reason. Tried to go Friday and nearly slipped over on the walk never mind the run, went yesterday and whilst it was raining which I don’t mind there were still frozen puddles so I was having to tiptoe around them. I didn’t want to use a treadmill but I would rather than not run at all ☺️

Thanks. I’ve been the same dodging the icy patches! Really don’t want to fall and hurt myself! Can’t wait for spring :)

Me neither ... can’t wait to run in the sun ☀️

“dreadmills' are not a patch on running outdoors saying hello trees, hello sky etc. The joys of fresh air and the freedom of the open road and all that chiz”. I had one for Christmas because We’ve been snowed in here twice this winter and there have been other days-like today- when snow, ice or slush made the pavements too dangerous for running. Mine is a small foldup one, cost about £160 from Amazon with postage. I hate it so much that I cant even remember the make, but it does mean I can always run. Not to be recommended except in emergencies as my legs always hurt after. But I really really do hate it with a vengeance.

Running on a treadmill is not like running outdoors but after taking a nasty fall Friday and having to forego my beloved run today, I wish I would've just used my treadmill ☹️. Yes, they are worth the investment if you will use it. I find running on the treadmill harder, less mentally stimulating but you gotta do what you gotta do. It is nice to have a backup plan.

Hi Julie, I started C25k when I bought a treadmill. It's always there ready for use and you can't blame the weather if you don't feel like running!

No avoiding cars, puddles, ice, angry dogs etc.

I keep motivated by covering up the time, (hate watching the minutes tick by)...and listening to music. When you've graduated and you don't have to think of the minutes you're doing then it's good to be able to run without any interruptions...and sometimes you surprise yourself how far or how long you've run for!

I would say that I've done probably 80% of my running on it, one of the best things I ever bought!

If you prefer running in the "real world" then buy a cheap one for occasional use.

If you can afford it, spend a bit more and get one with an incline, speakers and even a fan.

Mine is a Reebok GT60, there are lots of options.

Good luck with the running!

Oh and I found it easier on my knees! Running outside on pavements made them ache the day after...

And you can finish running and step into your kitchen or lounge and have a cup of tea :-)
