So I am a complete novice runner! Im early forties and have completed week one with minimal aches and pains but this week.is something else! After week 2 run 2 my knees horrendously painful...I can't kneel only roll around the floor to stand up and rising from a chair is a struggle.....ive tried resting, deep heat, baths etc nothing seems to work! My knees feel tight and achy! Any ideas surely my running days cant be over already?! I'm gutted.......

See a doctor. If things are so bad your rolling round the floor you need specialist help.

If the aches and pains you mention were knee related, then maybe a longer rest in between runs might have helped. Sadly, too late for that now :( but take out as much as you need to get your knees back in order.

It's unlikely your running days are over but it's important to get fit again before carrying on. You may have to repeat some of the runs if you take too long out. In the great scheme of things, repeating runs isn't the end of the world.

If the pain persists, consult medical advice.

Keep at it and then you'll be elated and not gutted. Good luck :)

Thank you! Great advice! Think I maybe expecting too much of myself!

Get medical advice.

Read the guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Stay positive.

Probably going too fast, overstriding and I guess your shoes may not be up to it.

i imagine your running days aren't over, there's been plenty of injuries and whatnot and people come back :)

Check out the FAQ posts.

To add to the suggestion (*when you're back running*) of more rest from antonioa ,

- are you wearing proper running shoes, preferably fitted after gait analysis- are you warming up long enough and doing some stretching afterwards

- have you tried running on soft ground, rather than roads

but of course as both antonoia and pinkaardvark say, if it's pain rather than aches, you might well need to consult a doc/physio, we definitely can't diagnose like this!

I think definitely rest up, if it gets better, add in some knee exercises every day, and then go easy on yourself (doing the above suggestions), make sure you always take at least one rest day (more is fine!) after each run :). If it doesn't get better, please get medical help!

Go and see a medical pro, someone good, an osteopath, a physio, ask around, google, but get someone good and soon.

They will fix you but you need to know what caused the pain. Running hard? Not having rest day/s between runs? Inadequate shoes with poor support? Lack of strengthening exercises?

Don't panic, you'll be fine. I was in a worse position and they patched me up so keep it up, it's a glitch but you'll come out of it, don't worry.

All the best!

Go to your Doctor. I didn't. Three months on the Injury Couch and now grateful as heck I can start the programme from scratch again even though I am a 5 and a 10k Graduate. I tried to "out tough, out wait and out last" my pain...say hello to "Idiot with dislocated hip"...

Please, do go to someone qualified to figure out what is going on.

Thank you for all your replies! Great advice! Think I'm going to see an osteo....I truly think I've overdone it! Thanks again and hopefully i'll get my trainers on again soon!

May I ask if they hurt at all during the run? I am a great believer in 'listening to your body'. It sounds naff, but aches and pains are there for a reason.

I would suggest knee supports, and if it doesn't get any better quite quickly, go and see a doctor.

On a far more positive note, I really doubt that your running days are over, just interrupted. When you are better - and don't be impatient - get a gait analysis done. I was advised to when I cam back into the fold, and it was truly excellent advice.

Not what you're looking for?
