So ..... I have just tried it . Freezing wind today made me almost chicken out of a run but then I remembered that I can use the gym at my sports centre . So first a zumba class, coffee then body balance and finally took a deep breath and tried the treadmill. What an odd sensation to be actually running on the spot as the distance goes by under your feet. The tree I could see outside remained tantalisingly close for 30 whole minutes. I didn’t have my running shoes with me but my trainers were ok since I think it is a kinder surface to run on than the uneven off road I usually do.
So what do I think? Well I was dry and warm , i could listen to my music and lose myself in a slow but steady pace, I wasn’t alone and I did manage to stay upright. I think I prefer the great outdoors but at least now I know I have absolutely no excuse for not fitting in my running days whatever the weather throws at me.

Good on you for giving it a try. I have a treadmill at home and have had to use it way too much in the last month. It will never be my go to, but it is better than not running when the weather is too ugly or too dangerous.
A combination of treadmill (for speed work - intervals etc) and mostly outdoor stuff - anything from hills, 5 to 20k, does me fine and actually a lot of good I think.
For the 2nd time today, this is from Runners World and makes the case for including treadmills in your running week:
See they are not bad are they? And for all the cynics out there, I'm sure you will concede they are better than not running, and many of us actually enjoy them!
