Hi guys & girls I just found this site and it looks fun for beginners, I'v jogged for a number of years but 5 - 8km is my distance and i'm 62. However I do a regular 5.5km jog and am struggling to get my time down I guess its because I don't vary it much, is this so.

If you are fit and healthy and running regularly you’d think it would be possible to get your speed up and your times down. Quite a few things to do that would be get stronger over all, and run intervals. I was advised to run fast 3k’s which worked. Need to get back to it 😃 You either run the 3k as fast as poss or split it down into fast 1k runs, slow jogging in between, no stopping. Fartleks sorta thing. Parkrun is good for getting you shifting 🙂
I was racing last Sunday and it never ceases to amaze me at how many fast over 60s and 70s women there are out there in my little corner of the world. It gives me much hope that I can keep doing it and improving. Some of the fast ladies, if I dare call them that, come from a very hilly part of the world and they do fell and cross country as well as road runs, so I suppose mixing things up could refresh your practice. Do you race? If not, do try it as it’s such a blast. Lots of here who graduated from couch to 5k are now racing like mad things 😃🏃♀️🙂
Whatever you decide to do, keep having fun !
Have a browse in here as we have a 5k community, 10k community, racing and race support and a fitness community. Our resident fitness guru is Rig 💪. We have our own running panther and leader of the 5 to 10k group, so do check that out as she’s so inspirational and strong 💪🏃♀️ her name is Juicy Ju and she has made some movie clips about her group sessions. It’s called 10 is the magic number 🙂
You could try doing C25K as a jog/run interval. I tried that and it helped with my speed. Good luck!
new to site helenwheels, what is c25k ??
Couch to 5k, the name of the programme followed by forum members.
This site is primarily for new runners who are doing the NHS Couch to 5k training plan, leading them up to running for thirty minutes for the first time. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...
However, you are welcome. Once we get to our 60s our bodies enter a natural decline and we have to do more exercise, just to maintain the same level of muscle strength and fitness, than a younger person would.
I am a great believer that running further develops your body to a greater degree, improves strength and therefore is more likely to lead to greater speed.
Intervals is generally considered the other main way to increase pace.
I appreciate i'm a bit ahead of the purpose of the site but initially i wondered if there was a guide for older people as my wife is 74 and would like to try a little jogging.
However thanks for the advice and i will try some interval work when this snow goes.
very informative, i must try and get rid of my heal strike again it just doesn't feel comfortable to me.
Hello, the bridge to 10K forum may also help you. Lots of people there working on improving their speeds
