A little annoyed, in the past I am sure that I have seen a campaign by the salvation army regarding X amount of pounds provides christmas dinner for x number of homeless people.
With this in mind I thought I would do a little sponsored run (don't worry I'm not after your money, it's sorted) to raise enough to give a few homeless people a christmas dinner.
With this in mind I emailed the salvation army fundraising team and asked if they could provide me with the cost to do this.
I got a response back telling me that £45 could provide support and advice for 5 people in one of their centers.
I responded with a further email saying thankyou but this is not what I asked, I then went on to explain my idea of doing a charity run to provide meals and also a number of my runner friends were interested in doing the same.
I got an email back saying sorry but they were unable to provide specific figures like that, so it was pretty much a no go for my idea.
Then today this came up on my facebook time line, I have sent a link to the young lady at the Salvation Army fund raising team
Not sure about the SA but this is another project I saw in the paper about providing company and christmas meals to a group of people who may not have family around - might be worth a look? oxfordmail.co.uk/news/15683...
Frustrating! But your heart and head in the right place....
Sounds like you got through to young work experience staff. Why would you be so frustrated? A few more probing calls, a few more hours and you're through to the right guy. Patience, man, patience. Once you've seen real bad times this experience will quickly pale in comparison.
Frustrated because if it hadn't been for a bit of luck I wouldn't have known about this, surely working in and behalf of the fundraising section it's not hard and a few questions could have been asked (if you don't know ask)
Seen real bad times, man you have no idea, but this is not the time and place and you should not judge nor make assumptions
Eyes on the prize... I think you do now have the information you were looking for.
Odd that it wasn't there on their website so you didn't even need to email in the first place... and you have helpfully 'identified a training need' in some of their staff.
You might be interested in the brilliant Lemn Sissay's Christmas Dinner for young care leavers. On leaving care, many teenagers are suddenly without a support network. They are more vulnerable to exploitation, ill health and homelessness. This is felt all the more keenly on Christmas Day. I guarantee any money you raise goes directly to providing one day of sorely needed company, fun and laughter! theguardian.com/lifeandstyl...
Good for you Roly, I know you will do a FANTASTIC job. I can only imagine what it must be like for homeless people, irrelevant of their circumstances and how they became homeless.
And yes, we should not judge, we are in no position to judge others.......
