Can't run!!

On my 1st week but couldn't run due to a chesty cough. Fine if I walk briskly though. Is this ok? Also just realised that I'll be away the weekend of my 5k 😳

To be honest I would wait until your cough has gone. A cold above the neck is ok to run with, any symptoms below the neck like a chesty cough, then no. Walking is not the same a running so you won't really progress until you are well enough to run. I know it is disappointing but another few days or so won't make any difference. Spend your time working out your run route etc while you get well again.

Thanks. I'm so disappointed as I was all geared up and have been walking to keep moving as before that i literally was a couch potato. I joined a local couch25k group on Wednesday and that's when I realised I couldn't run.

Not many people can run before c25k, that is the object of the programme. Which are you following? The nhs c25k or are the group doing their own programme? You can still be a part of a beginner group just make sure you one programme. Also note that most beginner's don't get to 5k at the end of the programme but will be running for 30 minutes. Distance will depend on your speed but it is important to start out slow and steady! Keep your motivation as your start is just around the corner.

Ok, I’ll follow the nhs one but train along with the other when I’m better. Thanks for your advice

Hidden has given you the pretty definitive answer.

Going through a simulation of a training run is not the same as doing it. You need to develop leg strength, cardio vascular fitness and stamina, which the programme does brilliantly if you follow it to the letter. It is not a tick box exercise.

Get fully well, give it another go and tell us how you get on.
