Well evening to you all. I'm completely new to this registered a couple of years ago but didn't start the programme but back now having sent the son off to uni and wanting to rediscover myself and get fit and healthy.

Carrying too much extra weight i.e. 5st and need to invest time in myself before it's too late. I live very rurally and wondered what types of places you all run. I have no street lighting so will need to find somewhere safe to run as it will be in the evening as l work full time. Contacted 2 local trainers to see if they run any group c25k sessions but no joy. Thought l may find it more motivating to do this with others. I need to pick a start date get on with it any advice would be very gratefully received. Thank you

Is there a town close to you? You could pick a safe route with street lighting. You could drive there, park up and go for a run. Best to stay safe and off dark roads . Check out an Athletics club also. Some of those do C25K groups this time of year.

First off congratulations on joining the best running club in the world. We are an eclectic bunch some of us run in cities, towns, villages, wilderness, tracks, beaches and not least treadmills. A lot of folks run in the evening with suitable hi vis gear and head or chest torches, I guess it depends on what visibility you have and the type of roads or terrain you need to run on.

Although most of us are solo runners, we never run alone, there's always loads of us on here to cheer you on.

So the best advice I can give, is choose your day, get your trainers on and do the running. Best advice is to take it slow and steady and to find your happy pace. The 9 weeks isn't meant to be taken as a necessity, most of us graduated after longer than 9 weeks, the main thing is to develop a sustainable running habit.

If you see posts or responses from either Oldfloss or IannodaTruffe , they are our site mentors and it is well worth following their advice.

Happy running.

Welcome to your support network.

You won't run alone with us behind you.

Personally, I believe that you are best doing this plan by yourself, otherwise there is a compromise of running pace, time of day to run and reliability of running partners. It is your journey, do it your way.

You need to find a safe place to run. Running on rural roads at night is not ideal, even with reflective clothing and lights, unless they are very quiet. It is much easier in the summer months. Parks, sports fields etc are the other obvious possible venues.

Damien's suggestion of athletics or running clubs may be the answer, as many run C25K groups. Check out leisure centres also.

You have quite a lot of logistical problems to overcome, but be sure, this programme works and will get you running in a few weeks and may totally change your life. We would love to see you succeed with this and cheer you to the finish line.

I started running solely on footpaths, which with a headtorch, are fine, as long as you feel safe.

Good luck.

Welcome...you have come to the right place for getting fitter, feeling finer and maybe losing a little extra luggage:)

Rural... evening runs.. sounds fine...high viz gear, head torch and pick routes in the daylight to use in the evening:)

I run fields, tracks and lanes.. graduated the winter of 2015... early morning runs..many of them in the dark.. it was fine. Saw no one... scared a few pheasants etc and a badger scared me... but felt much safer than if I had been in urban or city areas :)

So...maybe if you plot a route you are happy with ?

Hi Wantorun. I run with 2 friends from work, but have also run on my own. We started at a local C25K group, starting on a Wednesday evening. We then intended to do ‘home runs’ 2x per week after work, but soon decided that after a long and stressful day we wouldn’t feel like going, so we run at 7 am, before work, even dropping the Wednesday Club run and going in the morning instead. We drive to a park, do our thing, go home shower and go to work! We love it! Sometimes local councils promote C25K groups. You could use a treadmill in a gym? Or run in well lit areas. Can your persuade someone to do it with you? Good luck and well done

Have just checked on line and the nearest athletics club running the course starts in Jan 18 it's a 50 mile round trip and that would be x3 a week for 9 weeks so not sure that's viable. Think l shall bite the bullet and see how l fair on my own.

I have Laura on the podcast and I find her really encouraging and motivating. I actually didn't realise there was a choice though!

Morning Wantorun, To begin with stick to something reasonably flat and even I'd say. I have tended to stick to a pathway that runs alongside a ministry road or farmers field nearby but so far I've not run in the dark. When its dark by the time I get home I'm planning to run alongside my local bypass which has a cycle/pedestrian path alongside. I have a lovely high vis jacket with flashing led in the back too. Just take care and stay safe. Carry a charged phone with you and tell someone your route before you go just in case. Good luck 🍀

Welcome and consideration on your decision. You've done 2 most difficult task: decide and come here :)

Best time to start is now ;) or tomorrow after work.

I had a break and will be doing part of the programme from Monday, as I am still on holidays.

Invest in head light and / or good reflective vest. It will help you to stay safe on the road or just next to it, e.g. on the grass.
