I am starting up running again as my mental health has gone downhill the last few months. It is getting the motivation to get out and do it. But I know I will feel better and look better once I get back into the swing.
I hit the big 50 last month so it is more important than ever to get myself back on track.
Hi Hidden , welcome to the forum. You have taken the important first step and decided to start the C25K. Well done.
I started a few weeks ago, full of doubts, but motivated to give it a go! So far the programme works. The support and advice you will receive here is wonderful. You have come to the right place
Your mood will be lifted once you start the walks and runs. It is not easy, but it is doable. I'm sure one of the Admins will post soon to guide you through the site.
I think a lot of us still find those first few steps out the front door the hardest no matter if it's week one, a 5k, 10k or whatever distance we are contemplating
Just take it one day at a time and see what happens.
i suffer with depression and anxiety , i sometimes find that i dont want to do anything for days / weeks depending on the time of year , ive been doing the program for 5/6 weeks and i can honeslty say my mind has never felt better , i look forward to the runs and my mind and body are more stimulated than they have been in such a very long time , i dont like to talk about it but i do feel this has given me a new found mental spark X best of luck on your running and i hope you find it helps x
I run to help me deal with my own depression and my teen daughter's anxiety disorder. It's a few minutes, a few times a week (ideally!), with no pressure. Just me, my route, and my podcast. Nothing else exists for that time.
I don't always want to go - but out of about 400 runs I can only think of a single ONE time when I wished I hadn't gone. Every other time, it's been the best thing I could have done. And all the side effects are positive!
Hiya - are you getting back into running using the NHS Couch to 5K programme? It is great to have the structure - not just safely building physical fitness but also it is a wonderful buffer against all the horrible things we can tell ourselves (the forum of course is part of that too). Eminently suitable for someone who has been a runner but needs support.
Opinions differ on the merits of the music in the podcast presentation but it does have the merits that you just download, turn on and go - and Week 1 is really quite sweet. As is Laura.
Aside from all the lovely things people above have said -- I'll add: watch "Mind over Marathon" from the BBC! Lovely, heartwarming documentary following 10 people with mental health problems to see how running will impact them. Well done you, for starting. Keep on running!
Well done you... this is a great way to get you back on track
Keep posting for support, encouragement and advice...successes and set-backs, we have most of us, been there Follow the programme slowly and steadily... and take your rest days..
So many of us have realised the physical and mental benefits of this programme and running, and we are all in it together... the forum family.
I run and then I ramble ( as my friends on here know)... it is my way of expressing all that I feel... so.. good luck and enjoy the journey
Glad to hear that you've started running once again. Continue to focus upon how great it leaves you feel afterwards as your motivation to continue. Hopefully, it'll not take long for the bug to bite once again and keep you hooked.
Hi Sallyjane, I too run to improve my mental health. I recently came off antidepressants and dropped like a stone. I also had the worst migraine I have ever have. My doctor has refused to put me back on the antidepressants and told me to try exercise instead. I love running and can't tell you how much better I feel in myself. I really hope this will give you the motivation you need x
Hiya, I went back on mine after a bad spell. I always used to love excercise so just need to stay with it. Well done and keep me updated. Have a good day xx
