Do the plank every day for a strong core 😖

Ooo, I am including this ancient form of torture in my strength training now, IP! Can't hold it for very long at the moment though!😩

I always seem to land on my nose when I try..:)

just tried the plank and found it hard...how long can you keep it up for?

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate in reply togivman

Two and a half minutes continuously and I've not tried to do longer as I think that's long enough to keep me tickety boo 🙂 but I've been very naughty and haven't been doing it for ages (sore knee, sore back, blah blah). Must get to it again. Make sure you get the technique right and keep your back straight and level. I see a lot of people doing it with their bum in the air and that puts pressure on the back.

Get someone to check you out as you do it.

Core strength is good, definitely. I'm no expert, but the books I've read on body-weight training say that you want to do small increments (5, 10 , 15 , 20 25...) of perfect, slow repetitions, rather than lots of fast, improper movements, and build up reps slowly over weeks/months. :)

And as Irishprincess says, the plank is a great exercise. The foundation. :)

My first time I lasted about 5 seconds before just lying on the floor, laughing at how unfit I was :)

I love the bridge Sandra. I do mine with a resistance band tied around above my knees and have worked up to stretching out one leg at a time as this makes it a tad harder and I can really feel my glutes burn 😖

I've seen those variations - might try progressing to the resistance band. I think one leg might end up a bit messy at the moment!😮

There is a 30 day challenge for planking - it builds up to 5 mins. I did it then moved on to other challenges....."

I used to do 100 squats blithely while cleaning my teeth, morning and night. This sounds very impressive, until I found out that my form was absolute rubbish so I might as well not have been bothering :(

Now I do them properly and they are much, much harder. Much. Have I said how much harder? I can do 30. Weeping. But soon I will be able to do 35 :)
