Has anyone read these books (almost identical except one more specific to females)? I read them three years ago, and thought them full of very interesting stuff but their basic premise, that you really, really NEED to exercise in order to keep your body going seems too hard for me to actually do.

Just re-reading them, and wow they do make sense, and now the exercise is well inside my grasp.  I think people here would find them interesting. The sections by the doctor explain a lot of 'what is happening to my muscles' that I really wanted to know right now. Second hand from £3.05 on amazon.  If you buy one, I would recommend the women version as it covers all the stuff for men and then you can loan it out to anyone.

Oh wow, I downloaded it onto my Kindle and am reading already.  It is great and such sensible advice.  Thanks for the recommendation!

Here are the 'Rules' from the book.

1 Exercuse six days a week for the rest of your life.

2. Do serious aerobic exercise four days a week for the rest of your life.

3. Do serious weight training with weights, two days a week for the rest of your life.

4 Spend less than you make.

5. Quit eating crap!

6. Care.

7. Connect and commit.

How are you getting on with the book, LotToLose?

That is a great summary and it has changed my thinking about a lot of things - exercise in particular.  I had thought doing an hour, 2 or 3 times a week was enough, but I am going to change that.

I am three-quarters of my way through - just starting the chapter about caring (about what I am not sure yet).

My only criticisms so far are that it is very USA-centric and that the older author is rather sexist, but he is in his 70s!

Yeah it is VERY American, but in a way I think that helps, as he 'tells it like it is' right in your face.  Can you imagine a more diffident British approach, 'actually chaps, it is really quite important to do this, if you don't mind me mentioning it....'.  Doesn't have the same impact.  And while he does spend a lot of time drooling over attractive women he encounters, they are women in their '80's!  That has to be a bonus.  I would love someone to drool over me when I am 20 years older.....
