I just started the program last week. Starting Week 2 today. I have really enjoyed reading the posts and glad I found this site! Does anyone else have a hard time breathing properly? I can't seem to get the deep breaths needed! Ugh.
W2 Run1: I just started the program last week... - Couch to 5K
W2 Run1
I was quite panicky about lack of breath for a while.
Make sure you're not going too fast for a start, breathing is easier if you take your speed down a tad. Also, I still breathe heavily in and out through my mouth. Don't think it's 'recommended' but my nose gets really snuffly as soon as I start and I've found it works best for me. It's almost comedy big breaths that I do at the start, quite slowly, maybe every 2 or 3 sets of footfalls. Whether it's mental or physical I'm not sure but the kind of 'boost' at the start seems to help me then settle down and averts the 'panic' sensation.
Good luck in finding what works for you, well done on starting, keep going
Hi there.. welcome to you.
Slow and steady at this stage and... all the way!
I don't know how much exercise or running you may have done, but often, the niggles at the beginning of the programme are your body's way of saying.." what is going on! "
There will be loads of great folk on here to offer advice, but many will give you the slow and steady approach When I started, i was a Grey Snail Still works for me!
Just relax, go steadily breathe easily, don't try to breathe deeply, just let it happen..it will, honestly. ( Do not panic!)
Keep posting.. we are all here for you
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I will remind myself of the slow and steady! I am heading out soon for My W2 R1 and already feel the breathing 'panic'! I have always been decently active, but I am very new to running. The most running I ever did before was during a tennis match! I am looking forward to becoming a true runner (jogger)!! So glad I found this place for encouragement and advice!
Welcome to the forum KC , good to have you here !
Yes , controlling our breathing is a very common problem at first I think. Mine was all over the place, but in time it sorts itself out, as long as you are going at a slow and steady pace , you will be fine .
Good Luck with the programme and keep posting ! xxx
Well done on getting this far and for finding this excellent forum. Good advice given which I completely second.....what works for me is not to over think it too much and just let it happen. I for one am a mouth rather than nose breather, when i have tried to breathe through my nose that's when I start to panic. Try not to think about it, when I feel i am getting stitch or feel breathless a good old deep breath helps to straighten me out and makes me feel better. Hope that makes sense!
Good luck with your journey ☺
I really struggled with my breathing at first and then it all seemed to fall into place about week 3.
