Illness be gone Quest week 4

I hope everyone is is doing ok and those who are still on the IC couch are making progress.

What the quest is:-

The quest takes six weeks. You can join any time within that six weeks.

The main aim of the quest is to help you find a focus or goal that you would like to achieve by the end of the Quest period.

I ask that you will be a graduate or about to graduate to join the quest. The main reason I ask this is that while you are doing the program your plan is very structured so I wouldn't want the quest to interfere with that.

Most popular goals are:-

To run three times a week

To slowly increase distance

To train for a specific race

To add In Stretch and strength exercises

As you can see they are personal to yourself and it's totally your own choice.

Every week I will pin a new post where all the members of the quest can talk about how things are going.

So if you wanted to join all you have to do is put

I would like to join the quest, or count me in and then I would like to. ..............

Your name will then be added to the top post and every week your name will be in the quest until the end.

At the end, only for those that would like to, we each put out longest run of the quest and it is then marked on a virtual run.

Heart rate training seems to be going well. It is making me space my harder days out more as you have to take a morning heart rate to see if your recovered enough for another cardio session. In the past I hadent been taking my swimming sessions as cardio more as strength and I found last week I had to have a strength and stretch day after my swim as my heart rate wasn't recovered. I find it really interesting that just a difference of 7-8 beats can tell a story. The upshot of the week is one 10km run and one 5km run and 50 Len swim. Some good strength and core work with stretches. The bonus is that I wasn't as tired as I usually am by the end of the week

Wishing you all a happy healthy week.

Interesting about feeling less tired at the end of the week RFC.

Last week did go better with a couple of gentle runs and plenty of steps. It was quite inspiring seeing so many runners out in the hail on the Newcastle Quayside. Some of them had some very unusual gaits! Not so good on the calorie intake... I am a woman born for all you can eat hotel breakfasts. However, a grip has been got and this coming week I have a diversion from the Quests theme of supporting my husband in better health behviours as he's going to be away on business, so I shall concentrate on mine! (Although both my siblings have birthdays this week... but a weight loss programme derailed by two slices of birthday cake is no programme at all....)

The nearest I came to swimming was a paddle in the sea at Tynemouth.

I didn't have a great week as my mum was staying with us and we had a manic social diary! But I did manage the gym twice and have been doing exercises every day so I wasn't completely idle!

I did manage a 5 minute run yesterday in preparation for the scan today so that is 2 minutes more than before! And the knee wasn't painful today which is promising. The scan results are due on Wednesday. Gulp!I

Have a great week fellow questers and keep the faith all those on the IC (is it me or are there loads of us on the IC at the minute?).

I hope IP, and the rest of my fellow Questers still on the IC, the best of health and I hope you'll all be soon back up and running. Good luck for your scan results IP. Fingers firmly crossed for Wednesday!

Glad to hear your heart monitoring is working for you RFC, and you're feeling less tired.

I'm still running 3 or 4 times a week in training for my upcoming 10 k race. Running a scheduled fast 10k tomorrow. Another one! Far too many of those for my liking. I like a 10k as much as the next woman but not fast every flippin time. Sheesh. I don't want to be tatered before my race. Hmmmmffff!

Still doing my fitness workouts too. Just ticked of Day 12, Week 3 of Ripped in 30. A few of the moves are killing my knees. Jumping lunges!!!! My goodness me!

Sounds like folks are doing well - I love reading the posts. I've fallen into a deep running slump, just posted on it. Hoping to turn it around and enjoy some runs.

3 runs this week. Doing 10 k race on sat and bit nervous as will be my first trail race. Luckily fellow c25kers Lizziebeth and Wilma from here running it too. Wanted to give trail shoes an outing so Saturdays run included hills, trails, mud and more mud. Lots of stops to admire views and to breathe! Not fast but enjoyed it. It's first time this race been held at Glentress so couldn't check previous results so no idea how fast folk will be.

Only managed to do two runs this week. One 5 miler with Fitfor60 and the second was up and over Corstorphine Hill here in Edinburgh in prep for the Glentress run Fitfor60 mentioned above. My legs were very tired after 5.3 miles up and down the hill. Tried my new trail shoes which were comfy but I had to run a couple of k on the road at the end and my back feels achey now. Assuming it's because there's not the same padding or support as my road shoes. Hopefully they and I will be fine by Saturday and the trail 'race'. Have to say I'm thinking of it as a run not a race...we'll see.

No yoga classes this last week ( and yoga cd stayed in it's box) and still not managed to go for that 1 swim I said I'd do in February :(

Also reading RfC's post reminded me that months ago I said I'd try out the hrm that I got with my garmin - not done that yet either!

One fairly pathetic run last week. I weighed myself this morning and have put on 8lbs since Christmas, so am very fed up (ha ha) about that. However, that has made me determined to stop the overeating and do something about it. Money is tight at the moment so I can't really afford to go swimming, plus I've worked out what's stopping me - it's not the swimming, which I enjoy, it's the faff getting changed and then showered and dressed after in public changing rooms yuk! and the walk back in the cold. So walking and running are my main exercise options.

I'm not sure about this upcoming event on March 6th at all. I went to try out my trail shoes today but I'll have to have a another look at the website. At the moment I'm not sure I can still trot round a 5k on the flat, let alone if it's uneven terrain :(

I had a really good week with a couple of 5k runs and a lot of swimming. I even got close to my PB on Saturday's Parkrun, even though it was very windy. Unfortunately I have pulled something in my back so am not expecting this week to go so well.

parseraisin profile image

Hi folks, thanks for the update on the heart rate RFC. I'm itching to start tracking HR.

I had a good week here, four runs, 20k in total, plus a 2.5k easy walk one day. I reached my 100k of the year goal, and today I took delivery of a new pair of running shoes (same as current ones found on clearance online) and.... A Garmin (also super clearance)!

Here is the breakdown:

5k -continuous

3.8-speed/cadence :30 counting steps and pushing it, :90 easy run x 8

5k - run/walk 12/:30 till distance

6.5 - 6/1

I also stretched regularly, though I didn't do a single bit of strength exercising. My run this morning wasn't amazing, I think I may have pushed it a bit hard last week.

So, this week I'll aim for four runs again, but I'm going to make myself take short intervals and also take at least a minute long walk break between. I also aim to settle on a 10k training schedule.

I'm losing my mind here trying to get my thesis submitted, and I haven't had a moment to read all the posts. I hope you all had a good week and have a good one in the pipeline.

Good luck with the thesis. I'm submitting a dissertation for a batchelors this week (maybe tomorrow, have definately got to the point where I'm just fiddling with word choices) Can only imagine the extra stress for a thesis.

If you find yourself fiddling, fiddle with the Send button :)! Theses are... Well they're awful. I don't think I could have gotten through this past year without running, truth be told.

its done ! And yes running has definately helped my sanity.

Late with my write up but pleased to report that I managed my 3 runs. As I had a business trip to Paris on Tuesday/Wednesday I went running on Monday to get ahead. Garmin tells me I did 5k late afternoon. I think I might have been listening to Stamina, but memory is a bit fuzzy.

I had time off Thursday (to make up for trip time) so took the opportunity to do a daylight run before lunch and was thrilled to manage a new 5k PB. At 38 minutes 57 seconds I'm never going to trouble any elite runners. But 2 years on from graduation I'm still chipping away at the time. Maybe someday I will even manage the famous 5k in 30 minutes !

Saturday was start of a busy weekend so I wanted to keep my "long run" shortish, if you see what I mean. Handily we have a hill near our house, so I decided on an hour or so including some of the hill. Garmin shows I did 7k, in an hour, including 118m of ascent.

Plan for this week is two shortish weekdays runs (already did the Speed podcast yesterday... Might do Stamina tomorrow) Saturday I'm contemplating marking my 49th birthday by doing my first 10mile run ! (Current distance record is 15k, so its doable) Also to help offset birthday cake.

Will let you know how I get on !

Good luck with the goals this week, and Happy Birthday! February birthdays can be so glum (mine is this month too) - I hope you get a sunny day!

Back out there again this week, so far I've done a little interval run and a 10 km, which was hard..

Just one 5k for me last week. 3 other days with over 20 thousand steps though so not too shoddy.

Finally got to physio- see post elsewhere - and have some strengthening exercise to do.

Well done everyone else. Great motivation here to keep going when I can.

Thanks for putting this up again RFC , much appreciated xxxx

I did 51k of walking and running last week. That's what my phone app says, I think its mainly accurate as I walked 8 k each day , Monday - Friday and then ran the rest .

Did I lose any weight at Slimming World this week ? -No, nada, zilch !

Was a bit miffed, as I thought I would ,but I suppose it is better than putting any on :-) So, Ive got a bit of mental " tennis " going on in my head at the minute with one voice saying " You didn't put any weight on " and then a much more louder voice saying " Yeah, but you didn't lose any either ! " Arrrgh, give your head a wobble, Pug ! This is where Ive got to dig my heels in now and get busy !

Good Luck all fellow questers and lots of healing and soothing vibes for those on the IC . Another day closer to recovery :-) xxx

Wow, 51k, that's amazing!

poppypug profile image

It was mainly walking , about 40k and 11k running , split down over the week :-) xxx

40k walking is still wow in my book! What a great week!

Started using the Stepping stones podcast this week with the lovely Laura.

Have done it twice so far, the second time was easier than the first and will be doing the third on Saturday.

The second run showed up a faster average speed on my strava recording, but i only record it cos it makes me feel proud to look at afterwards not cos the numbers are necessary accurate. :)

Still both 30 min runs.

Have completed my third stepping stones run today... I really liked it. Laura gives some really useful advice and I didn't find her at all stern..

Maybe she is more bossy on speed or stamina. Which shall i do next peeps?

:)

Back on the horse! After a couple of weeks on the IC (I suppose it was necessary this quest..), last week I did a gentle 20 minute run & netball & yoga, aiming to do some more this week. Bad news= my running fitness definitely deteriorated in the break, good news= my abs are definitely looking more toned with all the yoga/workouts I did instead of runs!

Did a half hour run on tuesday and my hour advanced yoga class.

Wednesday did my netball recreational session including a 8-min abs interval session at the beginning!

Thursday I went to a boxing fitness session for an hour that was really hard! I was aching the next day so missed a run on friday.

Sunday I had come home so did a nice half hour (4km) run with my dad and my dog :)

Had a bit of a chesty cough this week so didn't feel at my best, but know I can improve again quickly if I keep getting out there and back into my routine. Got a 6.5k night run in 2 weeks so want to improve a bit before then!
