One year later ...

I graduated about a year ago. It's got me thinking, as it does a lot of C25K-ers.

Since graduating I have had an up and down year running-wise. I had a couple of weeks off just before Christmas last year with 'flu, then Christmas happened. Then I got back into it (started with with a walking break at about the halfway mark), then puppies were born so life was really busy. Got back into it as the summer came on, then another break of sorts over the summer holidays (still running, but not so far or so often). Then September and started again in earnest (went back to Laura at about week 4 or 5). Was nearly there again but I've now pulled a muscle in my hip and not even whilst running (I think it was a hurried, messy dismount from my bike)! GRRR!

Still, when thinking back I realise:

1. No matter how 'unfit' I think I have become after a break, I am still way fitter than I was when I started C25K 18 months ago (then the first week was hard work!)

2. Although it's hard building up again to running non-stop, I know I can do it.

3. I've discovered that my middle-aged body responds well to a 'softly-softly' approach. If I try too much, too soon, something starts to hurt. This last time when 're-starting' I took it really slowly and nothing ached until I pulled that darned muscle the other day.

4. I LIKE running! Who'd have thought it? When I don't get out for a couple of week for whatever reason, something in my brain starts to itch. Very strange ...

Hey-ho. Will rest for a few days and then take it slowly. As Confucius say "It does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop."

I haven't posted for ages, but it's always good to pop into this forum and pick up inspiration.

You don't lose that acquired fitness quickly, do you? Yes, it takes time to build up again, but it's easier to pick up where you left off than it was the first time round. Take things slowly as you recover from that pulled muscle, but in a few weeks you'll be as right as rain. Good luck!

Happy anniversary. You're very right about not stopping. It's reasonable to assume running will have its ups and downs with life. It's a great thing to have found, it's amazing the changes it makes in the body and the brain. And I also like the soft approach. Running really teaches you to listen to your body.

Good to hear you're never back to square one, once you've gained fitness. And you've learned to love it so that's great. Hope yr muscle heals quickly!!! Happy running.
