Ankle problem

I completed C25K without too much trouble and then went on to the speed podcast. This caused ankle pain which is bad enough to wake me up at night. I tried 2 weeks of rest without any improvement. Tried gentle running but this seemed to make it worse. Although running and walking did not hurt at the time, I suffer afterwards. Went to the walk-in centre where I was told it was either a ligament or a tendon problem and I should keep off it as much as possible but after a week I am suffering withdrawal symptoms and missing my run. Anyone else had this and how long does it take to improve? - I have had it for at least 5 weeks now.

Oh I'm sorry! You might try wrapping the ankle carefully during the day and icing it at night. Really baby it for a few days and see how it does. Also take Ibuprofen for inflammation. Hopefully you get better soon!

I've found whenever I hurt a tendon (and I'm prone to tendonitis, so this has been too often) that the only thing that really helps is rest. But then I haven't tried anti-inflamatories, so maybe someone will come forward with something more positive for you.

You could try swimming while you wait (just an example)? That way you'll keep your heart and lungs nice and strong, keep at least some of the muscles you need for running from losing condition, and next thing you know you'll be back.

Can I suggest you go see a physio. They will be able to give you the advice, treatment and exercises necessary to get you back running. Ankle problems can last for ages if untreated. Good luck

I would agree with Ancient Mum, unless the pain is till waking you at night and in that case you should see your GP. Good Luck.

I have taken a week off to see if it helps and it does seem a little better. Should I wait a little longer?
