Despite the bad reviews, I found the karrimor running shoes perfectly reasonable for beginners. They're not great, but affordable and light. Mine cost 30 quid and are still going strong at week seven run 2..If you really decide to continue with running then it's best to invest in something better like Saucony for example. (these are the ones I want next)
If you are going to buy new shoes it would really be worth getting proper gait analysis - it does not oblige you to buy there and then but at least you know what sort of shoes you should be looking at.
Another vote for Rig's suggestion. If do you get a gait analysis, then please spend your pennies at the shop that provides that service, even if they're a little dearer than your favourite online e-tailer.
They do gait analysis at Sportsdirect. Not all shops though take note. I love the Karrimor Tempo (go up half a size) They are comfy straight out the box. Mine are still going strong. I got a pair of trail ones too, although they are not particularly brill on wet and ice, but even some of the dead dear ones aren't either
You could still go to a proper dedicated running shop, get gait analysis and come away with a pair of shoes from the sale. I doubt they'll be as cheap as Karrimor from SD. The Aldi ones should be fine too! They'll be fine for C25k purposes and then you can trade up if you find that running is for you.
I wouldn't categorically say that the Aldi shoes are not as good as e.g. a karrimor shoe. However if you have achy knees it may be worth getting the gait analysis as it might just be that the shoes are not right for you e.g. do not provide the right support in the right places. Trying some other shoes on a shop treadmill also means you can compare how they feel when you run. so I also recommend getting some advice. The shop may let you use your own shoes with the treadmill too to see whether there is a problem with the fit or support of your current shoes.
